Noooo Not My Tranny!

So this morning i'm driving to work. Get on the highway and it won't shift into 4th gear. Pull over shut the truck off. Restart it, no difference.

Get to work, put it in reverse and it doesn't shift into any gear, basically in neutral as the truck rolled. So now i have no 4th gear and no reverse. It won't change gears until i get it up to 3000Rpms and let off the gas (that is to get it to shift from 1 or 2nd) then it clunks into gear.

The truck is a 2002 GMC Sierra Extended Cab, 5.3L Z71 4x4 with 227,000km. Had the tranny fluid changed at 150,000km. What do you pros think it could be? I hope the tranny isn't done. Anybody had an experience like this? Any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated...

yeeeesssss... sorry, your transmission is toasted..

assuming this is a 4L60E transmission...

from your description, it sounds like the sunshell may be fractured or the splines stripped ...

either way, the transmission has to come out for inspection and repair...

also... with your 227,000 km on the truck... you have to consider that you have got your money's worth out of it, and that the clutches are worn and it now needs a total transmission and torque converter rebuild... OR install a GM rebuilt ... the GM rebuilts have a good warranty

Edit: But the sun shells are bad about busting!!!! Get ya a beast sun shell if it busted.

WTF is a sun shell? I have been wrenching for awhile, and never heard the term. I am assuming this is only on the newer transmissions?, and not TH350 or TH400?

My GM dealer just called. It's toast. Dammit!!!!!!! They gave a me a few quotes as well (these are in Canadian dollars BTW)

Rebuilt tranny from the wrecker…

91 Days parts, no labour warranty - $2228

91 Days Parts + Labour - $2358

15 Months Parts + Labour $2618

Have my tranny rebuilt by dealer - $2728

1 year parts, 6 months labour

OEM GM new Tranny – 3yr, 160km $3022

Now what? Thanks god for the line of credit or i'd be cabbing it!

BTW. It did shift 1,2,3 then held still in 3rd. I couldn't figure out what was going on. It seemed as if i was driving it in "3" not "D". No noises though, until i got off the highway and it was jamming into gear at 3000rpm.

OUCH, what about AAMCO?? I'd probably do the replacement unit... It will be built in a cleaner place than the dealership service counter.

according to my Old Automotive Textbook, the TRUE Name for the 'Sun Shell' is a Clutch Shell. "A driving shell, or clutch shell, is commonly used to transfer power to one of the planetary sun gears." in our case, it is transferring power to the gearset that is 2nd, 4th, and Reverse.

BTW, My textbook is copyrighted 2004.

I would stay away from the ones from the wrecker... unless you had no choice..

When mine died last year, I had my mechanic rebuild it and provide a 1yr parts/labour warranty.. total cost including R&R and taxes was in the $2700 (Can) range ... I was running out of options because I needed it back the next day, and he was able to deliver... but no problems and no regrets on the repair.

The GM transmissions are also a reasonable deal with the 3 yr warranty...

If you can swing the $$$, I'd go with the new OEM. Better warranty and it can be fixed under warranty at any GM dealership. If you buy from a junk yard, you're only paying for someone elses problems.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
