Gear Change - 4.10 To 3.73?

Recommended Posts

I typically do not tow any more since out 5th wheel is permamently parked in a campground....

So, I am thinking about swapping my 4.10 gears for 3.73 to save a little gas as teh truck is now my daily driver....

Anyone done this??

Is it worth it???

Any suggestions as to where to buy a dear set???

Since it is a 4x2, I only have a singel set of gears to change....any suggestions would be beneficial....thanks in advance

what gas mileage are you getting now??

4.10s to 3.73s?? Not worth it... not in the slightest bit. You'll be lucky if you see more than 1mpg difference.

Change all of your fluids over to synthetic (if not done so already), give the fuel system a good cleaning, new spark plugs depending on mileage, make sure you have a clean air filter... depending on the status of all of those things you can probably get that 1mpg boost just from some general maintenance.

I would not be wasting $500+ to regear. Now if you had to put new carrier bearings in or something then OK, it might be worth spending another $150 for a new ring&pinion while they're in there rebuilding it if you really wanted to try it.... but to do it solely for mpg, it's really not worth it.

I have a 2002 Tahoe, 4.10 gears. I have an extra set of 3.42's and a set of 3.73 gears. Both of these are open differentials not Posi.

Used gear sets do not scare me at all so long as they are not chipped or damaged at all.

I have a 4wd and I am happy with 4.10 gears because we go in the Mountains around lake Tahoe frequently.

I have often thought the 3.73 gear set would be a good compromise. My 4.10 gears hold me down on the Freeway to no more than 75mph, any faster just drinks gas.

My Denali with the 3.42 gears would cruise up to 90 comfortably but seemed to always be in the wrong gear climbing the Mountains.

The Denali, 2001 with a 6.0L would get 16 mpg at 75-85 constant freeway. The Tahoe with a 5.3 will get 17 at 75 cruising but only 14 if I try and go 80.

Might as well do the Pinion Bearings, Carrier Bearings and axle bearings. If you do it all yourself, ( must have bearing pullers ) you would have $200. in it. A shop would charge anywhere from 550.00 up I suspect to change your set.

You might want to think about how much gas $500. could buy and how many miles the payback would be.

If you want the RPM's down for quiet and the extra small gain in MPG spend the money and enjoy the improvement.

I think you would slow your RPM by 200 RPM at 70. My 4.10s tach 2,400 at 70, I bet the 3.73's will be right at 2200
