Mirror Removal?

When I bought my 02 2500HD a little over a year ago the glass in the drivers side power mirror was cracked. The seller agreed to replace the mirror. The day I picked up the truck they were busy replacing the entire mirror assembly with a new power mirror assembly. This new assembly looked and worked fine; I kept the old assembly minus the broken glass just in case. Today while cleaning up the truck after the winter I noticed that the nice silver back side of the mirror assembly ( the surface of the assembly you see if the truck is coming toward you) has dulled over and no amount of glass cleaner, armorall or buffing will bring back the original look. My passenger side mirror is fine. I suspect that the replacement mirror assembly the seller provided was from a third party and this surface is of poor quality. I looked at my original mirror assemly and its outer surface is still perfect so I was thinking I would like to transplant the glass mirror from my 3rd party dull unit to the original OEM unit. My problem is I can't figure out how to release the glass from the housing. Is there a trick or special tool involved? I don't want to end up breaking it, but I would also like to get the look of the OEM back again. Thanks.

The GMT900s, the glass pops right off, you push the glass up and towards the truck and get your fingers under there and it will pop free with a little pressure. I'm not sure about the older styles, but you could always take a look and see. It may just pop off.

For the gmt-800s the mirror glass is mounted on a plastic plate

and just snaps into place.

CAUTION:

The GMT 900 mirror glass removal procedure is entirely different

than the gmt-800. They are held in place differently !
