Turn Signal Replacement

Hi Folks,

I've diagnosed my intermittent flasher relay problem back to the multi function switch or turn signal switch in the column. Have the bottom plastic cover off, but can't seem to find out how to remove the top where the screws are. Anyone have any luck or tricks in removing this top cover? Hope the steering wheel/airbag does not need to come off.

Also....I've disconnected the battery, but is there a fuse or something I should pull so that the airbag cannont be accidentally activated?

I believe the top cover is just snapped in place, but I did mine over a year ago...so can't say for sure. I do remember adjusting the gear shift and tilt till I found a position where it seem to go off and on easy, and the top and bottom piece clipped together in some fashion…also the air bag has to come off (remove battery connection and wait 20 minutes to be safe), as well as the steering wheel has to pulled. To remove the airbag, there are two holes on the back that you need to put a screwdriver in to release the clips holding it…I never was in front of the steering wheel doing this, just in case…The knee guard underneath also has to be removed to make is easier for the wiring....

I have my old turn signal stalk that works except for the windshield washer fluid switch once in a while...not sure where you are, but you can have it if you want to pay shipping...save you the cost of a new one in case that isn't the problem...they're not cheap, even aftermarket…

Thanks for the offer, but I had already purchased a spare for $25 bucks.

Can't believe that GM designed these simple little covers, that can't be removed without pulling the airbag and wheel.

I'll give it a go today.

Funny you should have the same problem as I. I just replaced mine but, looks as though the washer sending part on the new switch doesn't work. I have to check the motor first but, I'm pretty sure it's the new switch. It's from a Junkyard but, anything is possible. I checked all the fuses and can't find any that have failed.

I'm going to try and hot wire the motor to see if I can bump it just, to see if it's ok or not... Not the easiest of ruddy things to get to.

Replacing the Multifunction switch isn't for the faint of heart but, it isn't too bad either, Top and bottom covers come off for the column, you can leave the stearing wheel on and it should just pop apart. (well kinda) there is one stupid clip on that top cover that you don't really need as it all clips together anyways but, after that it's pretty straight forward.

Pull the dash apart, pull the cluster out, pull the lower metal shield out that's underneath the steering column, then use a 7MM (canadian made trucks) to undo the nut that holds the big plug connectors together for the multi-function switch, then push those plugs out of the connector.

You should be good to go. PM me if you haven't done it already nd still have questions.
