Swap Tow Mirrors For Power Fold In

Recommended Posts

OK guys - Need your expertise here. I purchased a 2007 GMC Sierra 1500 LTZ. I made sure and measured the height, fits the garage fine. The problem is that it has huge tow mirrors. I can't fit the truck in the garage without folding both tow mirrors in. I'm wondering if I can swap these big honkers for the smaller standard size mirrors that fold in automatically. I see a lot of people going from the stock mirrors to the power folding mirrors and from the power folding mirrors to the tow mirrors but not my situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

all of the wiring should be there, your existing switch may work also if you have the power extending tow mirrors. Otherwise you will need the "DL3 switch and mirrors"

I don't see why you can't as long as you have the proper switch on your door. I went the other way with my 07 and had HD mirrors installed. They changed the switch so I didn't have the folding button anymore. Now with this 2010, I took those same HD mirrors from my 07 and had them do it again, this time they left the switch I just don't have folding option but everything else works. Al the wires are there.

you'll have to have the chassis body control module programed along with the switch for the holding feature to work. The switch for tow mirrors doesn't have the extra button to fold the mirrors, just the directional control for the glass.......

Whats the chassis body control module?

It's more commonly referred to as the BCM. It's one of the truck's "computers" or "brains." From the 2008 GMT900 Electrical Manual:

BODY CONTROL SYSTEM DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

The body control system consists of the Body Control Module (BCM), communications, and various input and outputs. Some inputs, outputs

and messages require other modules to interact with the BCM. The BCM also has discrete input and output terminals to control the vehicle's

body functions. The BCM is wired to the GMLAN high speed serial data buss and the GMLAN low speed serial data buss and acts as a

gateway between them. If the BCM does not communicate the vehicle will not start due to the inability of the Engine Control Module (ECM)/

Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) to communicate without the BCM providing the gateway function.

Edit: ...and now that I've actually read that description, I'm not sure I fully understand it, either!

To answer you question, yes , it should be an easy swap. Your truck most likely came with the fold in mirrors being an LTZ, and the previous owner upgraded to the tow mirrors. If your driver side door has a switch that looks like the one on the left (I borrowed a picture from the for sale forum), then you are ready to go, and I don't think you will need to have the dealer program anything into your truck. My advice, just check the for sale forum on here, Craigslist.org, local dealer, or Ebay, and see if you can find a good set that matches your truck, and you are good to go. Easy DIY project.

edit: I forgot to attach the pic.

I don't know why they just don't leave the original door folding switch part there. They did in my truck. I just cant fold the mirrors in for HD mirrors that's all.
