Suspension Question

I have a '04 silverado ext. cab 1500. It has the 5.3 in it and I use it for towing my two horse trailer sometimes (about 2500lbs. empty) My problem is that it really seems to set my truck down in the back. The previous owner of the truck used to have a gooseneck hitch in it so I think maybe the Zsuspension has been sofened up a little. It always pops back up after the trailer is unhitched, but I'm just wondering if it would be good to have another leaf spring added for extra strengh? Will it cause the backend to sag eventually if the suspension is too light. I hate that thought. I mainly got the Z71 just for the higher look. I like 'em to stand up nice and tall. Anyways any ino on stromger springs would be appreciated.

This is what you want. http://www.supersprings.com/ I added these to my 05 1500 when I was pulling my 30 ft bumperpull trailer. They can be installed in less than an hour and you do not need to dissasemble anything. They come with all of the hardware and mount over your existing springs. They do not change the ride until additional weight is added, so the truck will ride the same with no load. Best thing is I sold them for almost what I paid when I sold my truck because they were so easy to take back off.

I meant I chose the Z71 over a 2-wheel drive. All the 4x4 models are higher than the 2x4 unless of course you have a lift kit. At least in those days they were. The new 2-wheel drives are looking pretty high.

the Z71 sits NO higher than any other 4x4 silverado of the same year/body style

Thanks for the link! I'm looking into those springs right now.

These are looking really good right now. Did you have the light. med. or heavy duty? I think I would need light or heavy. Light is rated for 2,000 and med. for 3,000. I would think even though my loaded trailer might weigh 4,000-5,000. The tounge weight wouldn't be a fraction of that and I'm thinking thats what would matter in this case? Anybody care to shed any light on that?

I had the med. I bought them from a local RV dealer and they advised me on the best set for my uses. I would try to contact someone at RV world or one of those type places. Those guys know their stuff when it comes to towing.

I have also been doing some research on the Air Lift suspension lifting kits. They are actually cheaper. I am confused on which would be best. Anybody have any info on the pros and cons of the two ways to add suspension help for towing? I am mainly concered with of course good support when towing, and a smooth ride when unloaded.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
