Transmission Temp

I have a 2009 LS Crew Cab 4.8. It tells me my transmission temps. When just cruising it runs around 150. Traveling back roads and hills I have seen the temps get to 190-200. I don't know if this is right or if it is running a little hot. Any feedback?

200 is a little high...but not unsafe. If you don't have an external cooler it will only cool as cold as the coolant in the rad, since its at 197* when it comes out of the engine it's not going to be exactly cold. The more air across the rad of course, the cooler it gets...hence the cooler temps on the highway.

Above 210* is getting dangerous...190-200 is OK, but you should keep your foot out of it to keep temps down.

Thanks that is what I thought. I figured it was just with the stop and go and hill climbing while hunting. WHen I see it i try to get it down ASAP.

I would get an external cooler put on it personally. If I did a lot of back roads and hunting etc where the temps clime a lot.

Cheap insurance man.

Trans fluid runs through the radiator for cooling. Thermostat should be about 195. It makes sense that under harder use, the trans temp would get up around 200. The only time mine ever got anywhere near that high was pulling my boat in hilly terrain on a really hot day. 180 is about as high as mine normally runs... but I'm not sure just how exact that number is on the DIC. I'd consider it more of an indicator than an actual temp.

I know my truck is heavy for the motor. I have never worried about the trans temp before. My 2004 didn't have one. THe only time it gets this high is when I am climing or stop and go hunting. I will probably put on an aftermarket cooler. Im ok with the temp, just don't want my trans to go sooner. Guess thats why I love the 5yr/100000

Its not heavy for the motor man...the 4.8L puts out almost the same torque as the 5.3L

yeah but 3:42. I love them for gas mileage, I'm getting 17 mpg compared to my 2004 5.3 with 3:73 which was getting 15, if I was lucky. Love the truck, just would like a little more low end torque, but when I stomp on her, she goes!

You'll have to wait till your 5 year/100K warranty is done for that...LOL

I know. I don't need any more power, but when its there it is nice! What mileage do you get with your truck? What performance helped it the most?

I get 14.21MPG...But I believe it is a birth defect I have that causes it...My right foot weighs 5 times that of the average person.:lol:

Something about doing a burnout through an intersection to beat the guy next to me cause his lane ends and I don't want him in front of me...that may have happened on more than one occasion. I don't speed a hell of a lot...but I like to get up to the limit ASAP.

I also don't do a lot of highway...that could be a reason for the low mileage too.

Best thing I ever did was get a tune...period. It was a totally different truck after the tune...and I gained 2MPG from stock.

I agree... AND you don't have GM's crappy AFM.

I love my 4.8 truck. It cracks me up when friends with the 5.3 scoff at it like it's a 1.8. FWONK them.

Thats funny! I can be like that from time to time. Something about following someone, it gets me mad. I want to get a tune so bad, unfortunately I know with my luck something will happen and my warranty will be needed for something big. I have thought about getting an exhaust and CAI. Have heard good things and bad things. I'll leave it stock for now.

I would leave it for now man.

To get the most...actually anything out of an exhaust and intake you really need to get it tuned.

IMO...neither is worth the money..only reason I have an exhaust is for the sound.

A K&N drop in is just as good as a CAI for my truck...they used the same intake for the 8.1L engine, so I would say it flows well enough for a 4.8L.

Only thing I would do different, just haven't gotten around to it, is get an MIT for the intake...one of these.

I just don't think that 300+ bucks for some filter on the end of a big straw gains enough power to be worth that much...seeing I bought my tune for close to the same price and gained so much from it.

Maybe as a whole kit, you could gain a little more having the intake and exhaust and having the tune adjusted for them.

That is what I was thinking. I will just put a K&N in it and one of those tubes. I know on my old truck I put a CAI on it and it sounded good, that was about it. Sooner or later I will wind up getting a tune. I might try a plug and play to get me something for a little while. Later get a 'real' tune.
