Trailer Battery Not Charging From Truck

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys,

I was hooking up my trailer today and went to lower the hitch onto the truck and the trailer battery was dead. That was fine so I connected the trailer power cord to the truck and still no power to my jack. Everything else worked...the lights to the trailer and the trailer brake but no aux power from the truck to the trailer. I had the dealer connect that trailer wire by the fuse panel under the hood. I thought that was for aux power. Is there something else I am missing. They connected that wire to the outside of the fuse box is this correct?

Yep,Theres another wire that needs to be hooked-up. Its under the brake booster,it goes right next to where they hooked-up the other one. The one they hooked-up is for power for the brake controller.

There are two wires that are connected for the trailer brake signal line and Battery Power wire. I have very specific instructins I can email from Hayes that outlines the reason and purpose of those wires. PM if interested

Maybe your dealer hooked up the wrong one?

Both are connected but there is no fuse in #68 in the fuse box I think there is suppose to be a 40A fuse in that slot for it to work. Am I correct????

They changed the locations of some of the fuses from '07,so it could be different.

This thread couldn't have been any better timing....I noticed that there was no power to the trailer connector on my truck today (working on a small project....more about that later).

i figured there was a wire not connected, but this thread clears that up.

Thanks!

Its amazing that even on the trailering equipted trucks that they are not fully prepared from the dealer for this. Come on, a 5 dollar fuse and two nuts, talk about penny pinching. Maybe a liability issue with the loose trailer brake controller wires under the dash if not connected to a controller? :uhoh:

I don't mind that they don't have the fuse and wiring connected, as most folks never use it (even with the trailering pkg). However, there should be an instruction sheet that comes in the glovebox or some place. We shouldn't have to go to the web or a dealer to figure it out!

Yes you need the 40 amp fuse, and the wire is taped between the fuse box and driver side fender. The dealers all know which fuse it is off by heart. I just did mine. Even with the factory trailer brake controller GM still makes you hook up trailer power! Tow haul mode also ups the alternator output to charge the battery faster.

1 40 amp fuse goes right beside the Stud #2

You will also need a metric nut I think its 6mm. Luckily I have lots from my bikes.

Hint: Hook up the wire first and then put in the fuse. Your wrench may ground on the fender support and blow the fuse( Did it in my 07 :noway: )
