Headers And Exhaust? Right Choice?

I have a 2009 Silverado Crew Cab 4x4 with the 5.3L Flexfuel so it

takes the E85 (I just use regular 87).

I currently have the Airaid Intake and the hypertech econ tuner. I

like the extra power and fuel mileage. I liked the tuner because I

didn't have to go up to premium.

So I am wanting more power and was thinking about doing headers and

exhaust. Is this smart? Or would just exhaust or just headers be the

way to go? Or is there a better power answer?

I was looking into these two for my truck and wanted to know if they

are the right ones to fit, and best performance for the money.

Also, do these fit together? Could I do them in my garage.

Shorty headers will gain absolutely nothing. The OEM manifolds flow as well as they do. Long tubes help but you'll have to lose the current Y pipe and cats... and add new cats, O2 sensors, wiring, etc.

A cat back exhaust will help a little... but they don't make a lot more power.

Edit: They sure sound good though.

So out of that set up, it will be mainly sound that is the main gain?

Is there any other good power adders?

costume tune.. you can get one for 87 octane..

i have the same Gibson system on my SS except mine exists behind both rear tires. i did notice a improvement over stock. mines in stainless and has lasted over 6 yrs. now..

Most well designed cat backs net you at least a little boost in power. It's not huge but it is a "well worth doing it" mod in my opinion...PLUS the improvement in sound is a nice bonus.

Okay that was going to be my next question, is it even worth doing headers and exhaust? Or should I just do exhaust and leave out the headers?

And by a custom tune do you mean a dyno tune? Or purchasing one on the internet?

I'd do the cat back and leave the headers... then get a BlackBear tune. I know a lot of folks that are quite happy (myself included) with the results of Justin's tunes. Check em out. They are a sponsor here.

Does black bear have a return to stock option? Is it just basically a hand held tuner?

Yeah, you can buy a separate PCM & TCM where you can get the performance tune. You can leave the other PCM & TCM stock, so if you ever need to take the truck to the dealer to get serviced.

It is not a handheld tuner.
