I'm having some PC problems, luckily we have Becky's laptop as a backup, so I can still get on here and rant about it.  :D

MS Word has been messed up for months, and I haven't been able to fix it.  After having a friend try to fix it again last night, it is really screwed up. It no longer can find Windows.  I no a guy back home who said he would fix it this weekend, so I have to unhook it and take it home tomorrow.  I think we'vedecided to just crash it and start all over.  That seems to be the best route at this point.

Hopefully I'll have it back up and running soon, this laptop is SLOW on this site.   :)

It may just be time to re-install from scratch.  We just got a new Dell 4500 with 512MB.  It screams.

Gateway messed up many years ago.

When they first came out, they were a high quality item.  Then the started selling a lot and the cutbacks began.

I have heard that the newest ones are good, but I am still not willing to give them a chance myself.  As a network admin, I either build it or buy Dell.

Doesn't sound like you need a new one though.  If it is more than a couple years old, buy a new hard drive.  You will be amazed at the improvement in computer speed.  I can get an 80 Gig IBM for less than $100.  I've done this on quite a few P@ 166 & 266.

Also, go into your c:\windows\temp file and delete everything and reboot.  If you are having trouble with Word, uninstall it first, then delete temp contents, reboot, then reinstall with typical options.  MS products usually are more stable if you do a typical install and then install options later.

Your not the only net admin. this one works for Gateway. Your right Gateway went through a few "cutbacks" not to long ago but I garuntee you things here changed back. The original owner is back and the focus is back on the customer.

I have 14 Gateway's at my house (ranging from a 200 Destination PC to a 1.8 g with 19 flat screen) alone and have yet to have any real hardware issues (lost a few modems way back but that had a lot to do with lightning.

Buy Dell all you want some people just like be second best....

"Dude your getting a Dell"... #### no! I would rather trust a talking cow.

I agree with watz - Wipe and Reload.  My husbands laptop got the SirCam32 virus and it hasn't been the same since. It's an old IBM Thinkpad piece of crap, not even worth rebuilding it.  I did a reformat/reload on it once.  Never again. I just hate that freakin' machine.  We shopped on half.com and got a really nice Dell Inspiron 5000E laptop for a very reasonable price.

MarkD's solution is a good one too!  Hardware's cheap nowdays but, like he said, it depends on how old your machine is and also how upgradeable it is as well.  Good luck Elwood! :)

It is a Gateway.  I doubt I'll own another one, but you never know.  I figure next time, i'll just get one that isn't a big name from one of these companies my computer friends go through, and just put what I want on it.

Tonight or tomorrow, we start cleaning it up.  I'mjust going to start over from scratch.

DUDE!  Didn't mean to offend!!!

Again, I have heard the new ones are good, but the company has bitten me too hard to go back.  ( I have 12 at work that are 3-7 years old).  I have 21 Dell workstations at work without a problem.  I have 3 Dell laptops at work (I have had to replace the modem in one twice (at no cost).  I feel sure it has a pebcak problem.

I only have 4 workstations, 1 server, and 1 laptop in my house.  All of them are MDC brand (Mark D computers) except for the old IBM laptop that I use for Autotap.

Tonight or tomorrow, we start cleaning it up.  I'mjust going to start over from scratch.

If you need any help, don't hesitate to call.
