Might be adding an HD truck to the stable

I took a look at a 2002 HD truck today (8.1, extended cab, long bed). Very nice truck. The only thing that it needs is a motor. The stock one took a big drink of water and it didn't seem to like it. I'll probably go the naturally aspired route with modifications for this one.

A motor is all it needs? Geez, for a minute there I thought you were going to say it needed something big, like a tail light bulb.

I can locate a motor so it won't be to bad. Plus it's a good reason to slide a bigger cam in there.

My thoughts exactly!

 

This is a relatively low compression motor at 9.1:1.  So I figure a nice set of heads and cam will bump my compression a point to a point and a half bringing me somewhere between 10.1 - 10.6:1.  From there I still have breathing room for some form of turbo or S/C and still be able to run on pump gas.

 

Can you imagine the power of a H/C and turbo/supercharged 496???????????  :D

 

And the G/F has given me the green light to do it.   :)

I need to get my Suburban on the dyno but estimate that it's in the 400rwhp range. Add the additional breathing for a head/cam package you could be getting in the 475+ range with very good torque output.

What did GM do to the 8.1 heads that differ from previous models?  I already know about the rocker arms but what about the head design in general?

I'm not sure what the difference is between the two. I'll be pulling one of the 8.1s apart and may send the heads out to have some porting done. Mods to this one will include -

 

Comp Cam # 46-408-9 - 206/212 .510/.510 112

The Other Guys headers

Volant induction

Superchips programming

Stock exhaust - want to keep it quiet

 

Two tone paint

20" wheels/tires - it will be more of a work truck so nothing to radical... for now :)

PIAA airdam with 40 series driving light

PIAA Superwhites for the high and low beams

Billet grill

 

There will be other things added as it progresses

I saw an article in a speed mag that took an 8.1 and got 750+ Hp using a centrifugal supercharger.  The reason I bring it up is the fact they put a new cam in and used the original non-adjustable rockers.  The lift was .600+ and was past the recommended max lift for the valve train.  I can't recall if they did any porting etc.  Maybe the new heads just need a little cleaning up?
