Well, here's my deal.

When I turn 18, I'm lookin' to get out of this Hallmark crap. One of the things I want to get into is Tree Service.

Does anyone here have experience w/tree service or know anyone who's in it?

I wanna know what's the Good, the bad, and the "skinny". :)

I look at it like real estate, people will always want to buy/sell real estate. Trees, etc will be around for a while, so it seems like the work will always be there.

I'd think it would depend on local competition and how saturated the local market is with that type of service. Are you looking to start a company or work for someone else for now?

TxDoc - What's up with that post???

As someone has said it will depned on your market area....

I have several friends who are Landscapers/Tree service and they do very well in Upstate NY (Several Ice storms, and other nasty weather keeps the tree service side extremely busy) they plow in the winter.

It shows that you are in Richmond, is there a large "tree" population, reason I ask, My neighborhood here in N. Denver has ZERO trees, and not alot around, except in the mts., so not a good place to start your business....

I am rambling... bottom line, my buddies do well!

What do you mean?

A registered arborist is a high dollar tree specialist.  They don't just come out and trim limbs and cut down trees, but demand top dollar for saving old trees and expensive trees. There is only one is this area and appointments are necessary.

I don't think "arborist" is what I'm looking for.

Basically, I want to be the guy that hops up in one of those bucket-trucks and fires up a chainsaw.

I want to get hired with someone, maybe Asplundh? If not them, there are a handful other local companies to get with.

Trees are plentiful where I live.
