Fan Hub Question

I installed a new fan clutch on my 2001 silvy because at idle it would creep up to 205 via my scangauge,, and also the a/c did not cool well at idle...

So, I went to my local autozone, and purchased a fan clutch.. They gave me the one for a truck with a towing package(which mine has), and I removed my old clutch... Just as I suspected,, I moved the shaft forwards and backwards,, and it loosened up to a point where I could just spin the shaft in the clutch... Good sign that my clutch was bad!! Cool, eh?

I install the new clutch, and put all my plastic back on...

Clutch was tight, good sign...

Now it seems that it will not disengage... Given it was about 100 degree's today,, the fan was drawing all day.. When I left this morning, it was 88 degree's,, and was engaged.. I thought it would "loosen up" some,, and after 100 mile trip,, still sounds like an airplane taking off..

Is this a bad clutch out of the box, or just a by-product of a fan clutch rated for towing???

That is weird! :jester: Give it some time to break in. Try spinning it with your hands, if it's too stiff, I'd look for another one. But, you have to admit you love that sound, right. It sounds like it's gonna eat another car if you piss it off!

Sir,

Remove it and take it back to auto zone. I usually use aftermarket parts but have never had any luck with non dealer fan clutches. The dealer part is more expensive but they work.

I am gonna give this one another try...

I went outside to move my truck, and when I started it,,, the fan was engaged... I reved the engine to about 4000 RPM for a few seconds, and the fan disengaged as it should.. I am gonna see how it does on a day when it's not 102 degrees...

If not, I am for sure get a delco clutch..

I have been selling 4 Seasons fan clutches for years. No problems with them. I don't know who makes the Zone's now...

If the engine is off it should not free spin over 1 turn. A brand new one should not move more than 1 or 2 blades on a spin (engine off mind you). People tend to forget just how much the fan clutch should spin.

NEVER TRY AND HOLD A FAN WHILE SOMEBODY CRANKS IT. Even if you think it will tell you if the clutch is good or bad. Don't think about the 2x4 holding it not my hand either... Yes, I had a DIYer hold one before, he only lost 2 fingers (thank god it was not in my parking lot, he did not need the fan clutch only a thermostat, after he had been the the doctor he stopped by and bought the thermostat, his wife told us what happened........).

Remember AC Delco is a packaging label for the great majority of parts (do they still make spark plugs??).

About the Heavy duty fan clutch here is your answer (last paragraph).

My experiences with aftermarket fan clutches mirrors yours. They stay engaged too often (ie, all the time).
