2008 Sieera Denali 6.2l

I bought an exceptionally clean 2008 Sierra Denali - 17K about a month or so ago. Of recent, I have been noticing that after the truck sits for the night, I am getting a very loud ticking noise when started and continues until the motor reaches operating temperature (220 degrees).

 

 

I brought the truck into my local GMC dealer ship and they quickly identified the noise, advised that it was not normal and have pinpointed to a piston on the passenger side. As of today, the dealership will be tearing the motor down tommorow and will be doing one of two things. The first being replacing only the piston (which I am not a fan of) seeing that obviously something caused the piston the fail, or 2) replacing the entire shortblock.

My question is, how solid are the 6.2 L's, is this a known problem? Luckliy the truck is both certified and I also purchased the major guard to 90K. In your opinion, is just a piston replacement exceptable? I am meeting with the service manager tommorow at the shop once the engine is torn down.. Any help would be appreciated.

if the piston(s) is scored up =new piston(s)

 

if the cylinder(s) is out of spec=new block/engine

 

the general will fix the problem for cheap,not what you want ,there is lots of documentation if the problem arises again .

 

i have done many cost comparison/analysis for rebuilding transmissions and the tech working on your engine will do the same,if the cost to repair is higher than an engine ,you get a new engine
