03 Ss Center Consule Question.

My buddy just bought an 2003 SS and it has holes in the forward center consule compartments. I have an 02 and this area is where my cassette deck is. His has two "shelfs" directly below the radio and each "shelf" has two perfect holes that are approx 1/4" in diameter each. The holes are too perfect to have been drilled by previous owner and they have no drill bit marks. Anyone have any idea what these holes are for?

Are they on the bottom of the "shelves"? If they are,and they are the holes I think they are, they are for rubber mats/liners.
