What Qualifys As A True Load?

just curious, what would be considered a true load on the engine? i mean i've read trannys hate shifting with a load on them but, i mean are we talking like upper power band kind of revolutions or are we talking like driving like grandma kinda engine speeds?

Anything that requires the engine RPMs to increase can be considered a load in my opinion.

If that is the sole definition of a load, then pulling a heavy trailer up a 6% grade wouldn't be a load. That doesn't require an increase in RPMs, just more throttle to maintain the same RPM.

A load IMO would be anything that requires more throttle to maintain the RPM than necessary to maintain the same RPM in Neutral. But then you get into the thoughts of the Alternator being a load, and the AC, etc.

When talking about the transmission being under load, that would IMO be anytime that the engine is trying to get the driveshaft to twist the pinion gear faster, or likewise when the pinion gear is trying to make the engine turn more RPMs

There is always a load on engine(rotation of it's guts is a load),, but true load would be a braking force on the engine(force not created by the parasidics of a tranny, rear end, ect).. Anything working against the engine other than it's self(grade, speed, weight, wind, ect), would be load..
