I am considering a Gibson cat back exhaust for my 2.2 S-10 to increase power.  I'm looking at a single 2 1/2" system that would use factory hangers.  I have an automatic so it tends to be a little sluggish at times.  I'm interested in increasing HP but not dramatically increasing the noise.  Not a fan of loud four bangers, so I want to keep it down if I can.  Will probably put a K&N FIPK on later to help it breath but have a drop in now.  Any suggestions or experience with cat backs on a 2.2 would be appreciated.

:D Maybe I can help ya out a little bit.  I have some experience with 4 bangers and fixin' them up.  I will tell you that it's usually much better to do intake and exhaust at the same time.  Imagine breathing in through a regular straw and exhaling through one of those huge straws.... or vice versa having an engine that can inhale but can't exhale sux, other way around, same.  For the intake, I hear the FIPK are pretty good, but AIRAID, streetperformanceproducts, etc all make decent ones.  As for exhaust, don't just do the cheapest one, if you plan on keepin it, talk to others in the area with exhausts and see what you like... my buddies 94 s-10 sounded pretty good with flowmaster 50's.  :)

hey, your in luck, cause i own a 98 sonoma with a 2.2L, and i replaced just  the muffler 'bout a year ago with a dynomax super turbo( cost only 40 bucks at advanced auto), and it made a bigger impact on sound than performance. it idles a bit louder than stock, and when you 'get on it', it actualy gets a little quieter with rpm, BUT its loudest in the usable rpm range of 1500-3000. a performance shop here said the gibson and dynomax are relativly the same in performane and sound, but im planning on getting a gibson cat back in stainless steel so itll last longer. i also have the k&n fipk and love it.it increases throttle response pretty good, and mid range power.

Where do the 2.2L's usually hang out at on this forum?

The other forums that support the s-10's all have 2.2L rooms..

My mod's for the ole 2.2: '98,5-speed, Helix TB Spacer, K&N FIPK, JET Chip (Stage1), High Flow Cat, Header, 2.5in Exhaust with Flowmaster Delta Force, Accel Coils, 180°thermo, E-fan, Xtreme style air dam w/Round Blue Fogs, Clear corners, Taylor 8mm Spiro Wires, ASP Power Pulley, 2/3 Drop, sport mirrors, 56mm Throttle Body...next is a sport cam

have you done all of this to your truck? id like to know where you found a 56mm throttle body and is it a regular header or a shortie header? and where do you plan on getting a sport cam at?

Drag Evolution has 2.2L internals. Sport or Drag Cam.. or go big with a 2.4 stroker kit.

The company where I got my 56mm TB will not be selling any more TB's for the trucks, just the Cavies. You can take yours to a machine shop and have them bore it out to 57mm though.

The header is a regular tube and comes with a 2.5 inch down pipe.

I would have never joined this forum if I knew that they did not support the 2.2L S-10's.... great that they support GM and GMC, but I am just looking to expand the forums for the s-10's that I know of.

I heard a flowmaster exhaust on a 2.2 extreme, I personally didnt like the sound, it was partially because he would floor it through the parking lot in first gear
