picking up a decent s10 reg cab 2wd with 4cly and 5spd now..' would really like to do a v8 and a 5 speed

never done this before but i know tons of people do it..' just curious whats the best way to do it..should i stay injected.. or would it be easier to go carberated and have less computer issues to deal with.. if i do an auto i figured a 4l60 or 4l80e.. if not whats a good 4 or 5 speed to go behind a v8....Thanks

My dad in law has one. It's a 350 ZZ4 with a 4l60 behind it. It's carburetted, but runs like a fuel injected one. Except, of course, it has a cam in it to sound good. Pretty damn fast for a pickup, it is.

Sorry, not a 4l60, a 350 tranny

What was the hardest part of the project? if you or him didnt mind..give him my number and see if he wouldnt mind giving me a call.

The hardest part was getting the brackets in where the motor would sit in there right. When trying to put the 350 on the 4.3l brackets, I think the motor was wanting to sit a little bit too far forward. I think. So we fabbed up our own brackets so we could sit the engine in it as low as possible.

Thanks guys.. youd think there would be a company to make motor mounts for a v8 in an s10

There probably are companies that do it. Check out eBay, I bet you'll find what you're looking for. (there's no wink emoticon, we need one Josh) Oh, well ;-) Old style.

Edit: Wait a minute, I guess the thumbs up is winking. I guess that'll have to work.

Depending on how mutch power and how many gears you want. trans choice is simple.

If you want overdrive its a 700 4R built up alil.

If you want raw power and dont care cor OD a turbo 400 is the ONLY WAY to go!!!

As for installing the V8.

How easy do you want it, Alil fab work? or Plug n Play?

If your like me and tired of doing things the hard way.

Look to stylin trucks conversion kits.

Part #'s

Cheapest way to a V8.

RN51004 Headers

RN 54005 Motor mounts

RN 54006 Tranny crossmember

The ultimate for plug n play is kit

RN 54009 Everything you will need.

This is the kit I use when building my S10 toys. I have had a few of them.

Just remember! Build or replace that POS! rearend or you will be really mad when it blowsup.

If you dont care and just want to run the stocker for awhile, look into the older cameros and transams for a posi unit that will bolt right into that pos rearend.

You will also want a aftermarket front swaybar to help control the truck in turns, that heavy V8 reall hammers the stock one.

Be ready to buy a cowl hood. depending on your intake hight you will run into clearence problems.

BTW Get ready to have more fun in a little truck than you can ever imagine!

Thanks for all the help ezdaar, im really looking foward todoing this. i just wish money wasnt so tight right now.

so should i stay carberated?? that would easier..right?

yea carbd V8's in S10s ROCK!

Just beshure to use a wideband to tune it and you will love it!

If cash is tight, grab the top 3 part numbers, one 14" electric fan, a preset temp sensor from a camero that closes circut at 180 and drop it all in.

You might need to clearence the oil pan alilbit to clear the crossmember.

FS V8 truck pans are deeper then V6 or 4 cyl pans.

You will need the Throttle and kickdown cable adapter aswell, orielys sells them.

Your will need the adapter for your speedo aswell. I just never hooked mine up as I didnt care for it anyways. GPS and most high end radar detectors often have MPH built in.

Your factory radiator will work fine if you use a cowl hood and wrap the headers.. If not grab the HD rad out of a 4x4 S10.

Beshure to install a tranny cooler.

O MOST IMPORTANT TIP!!!!!

When you have the stock engine and tranny out. Grab a 4 pound sledge and crawl under the truck, look at the front of the trans tunnel where the body panels meet just behind where the engine sits.

You will see 3"'s of metal hanging down. BEAT THAT SHEET UP! and out of the way completly across the trans tunnel. I generally knock that metal flush with the tunnel then clearence it up more about 2"

This will save you TONS! of headache installing the trans to motor bolts from under the truck.

Once you have it all installed trailer it to a driveshaft shop and have your driveshaft cut down to fit.

What's wrong with the stock s10 rear end?

Stock S10 rear is a POS, 250Hp to the ground will pop it within a month if you put a posi in it and get ANY tire that will hook decently.

My last S10 went through 4 of them before I sold the truck. Simply due to ready access to them and old camero posi units at a local junkyard.

Any 10bolt will hold up just fine, you will still need to get the axle tubes cut and shorter axles..

There are companys that make these rear end direct swap, but you will pay.

The 10bolt will hold in a S10 to aprox 400 Hookin HARD before it pops. Just beshure to get the diff cap that has the preload screws in it to keep the main bearings from backing out and blowing the rear.

If you want a Real rearend, have a ford 9" cut to fit and bolt that baby in. Unless your putting over 450 to the ground a properly setup 9" will hold just fine. Even then With a good builder and getting rid of most of your axle wrap the 9 will hold more than you will probly ever put in that S10.

As for the exploder rear end. NOWAY! the sissy 5.slow that came in them would blow that rear end to pieces, not to mention the trutrac system in them was pure junk.

These numbers are based off of builds from guys I meet at local car meets and tracks. NOT based off of perspnal exp.

My S10 build where always mild mannerd trucks I used to road race.

You gotta remember unless you go to a 4link or similar system you will have alot of wheel hop due to axle wrap. that constant loss and gain of traction is what causes most rears to blowup.

Yea bro, PM me and we will swap #'s. I been building S10s for ALONG time, Have lots of lil tips for ya.
