I have a 2005 gmc z71 1500 sierra that recently blew out the rearend and transmission practically at the same time.....is this common? Also I have been having trouble with the electronic 4 wheel drive and was wondering if it was possible to eliminate the electronic push buttons and change it over to a manual floor lever type and what would be involved in doing this. thank-you jeff

if you nuked the transmission the transfer case won't work....it is not very common to nuke a rear end and trans....yes you can switch the buttons to a floor shifter but its a ton of work...

It is very strange to lose the rear end and the transmission all at the same time. Like Jro said, it is a lot of work to change to manual 4wd. What kind of trouble are you having with electronic 4wd? It is not uncommon to have trouble with the 4wd actuator. Often times these need to be replaced if you are having issues.

We are thinking when the rear end locked up it broke something in the transmission, rear end is fixed now transmission needs to be done.

The 4wd. has been acting funny for awhile now been told it's probably the electric motor on the side of the transfer case I assume this is what you are calling the actuator? They are anywhere from $400 and up around here depending what you get (junk yard or new) but if that's going to keep recurring it may be cheaper in the long run to change it over.

What exactly do you mean by acting funny? What happens when you press the button to change into 4Hi or 4Lo. Does the light blink and stay on Auto or does it change and light up on the button you pressed? Do you hear any noises?

The light would hange from 2wheel to 4 wheel hi or low while driving,I would start the truck and look at the lights and it would say it was in 4lo shift to neutral press 2wheel button hear the normal sound of it shifting to 2wheel and it would be fine and a bunch of different things like that......had it scanned no codes would come up learned to be very aware of what those lights were on

Could also be a faulty switch. I worked in the parts department for a Chevy dealership for several years and these switches were a very common problem, we replaced a lot of them. Could be something as simple as that. That certainly would be nice for you because it is an easier fix. Hard to say though. I'm sorry I can't be of more help to you though!

Changed the switch all ready no difference, probably the safest and cheapest in the long run to change back to manual shift. Thanks for the help.

by actutor do you mean the motor on the side of the transfercase? The prices for that I got from dealers and junk yards

I don't know where you've been looking, but an actuator doesn't cost 400 bucks.

Have a look at these actuators, one goes on the front diff and one on the transfer case, depending on which one of yours is broken.

you cant really put a life span on a part, an actuator could last for an hour or a decade....swapping to the floor lever would involve cutting into the floor...tinkering with the computer..taking parts out..adding linkage...your high if you think going to manuel 4x4 is cheaper then fixing the electronic 4x4
