Adjust A Brake Light Switch

Hello,

I have a 1988 GMC Pickup 2WD Pickup and I am having a problem with my brake lights. It seems the brake light switch needs adjustment. When I let off the brake pedal, the brake lights stay on. I have to put my foot behind the pedal and pull it towards me about 1/8in. and the lights go out.

My question is how do I adjust this switch so that I do not have to manually shut off the brake lights with my feet?

Thanks

Just replace it. I fought adjusting one in an old van my wife had and it was just that the switch was going out. After adjusting it several times I finally broke down and spent the $10 to replace it. Never had a problem again.

Ok, I have since replaced the brake light switch of my truck. I adjusted it according to the directions, but, when I press the brake pedal, the whole unit moves. Then, when I let off the brake pedal, the whole unit moves back and it forces my brake lights to remain on all the time. There is only a connector at the top to hold the unit in place, but the bottom half has no way to remain still while the pedal moves back and forth. How do I fix my switch so only the lever moves with the pedal and not the whole unit??
