2004 Silverado 2500 - Trailer Wiring Mess

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a 04 2500 and I'm trying to figure out the trailer wiring. It is not a 2500HD but it has the HD tow package. I'm assuming the HD package came pre-wired with a 7-way connector. Beside the hitch receiver there is the bracket where a 7-way connector would usually sit but it all bent up. I'm guessing the previous owner backed it into the trailer and smashed it up.

I was going to purchase the piece with the cover and just plug harness into however it looks like the cut the connector piece of the harness off as well. This isn't a big deal as you can just get a generic 7-way connector and hardwire the wires to it. My problem is that I don't know for sure I have found the correct wires.

I found a bundle of wires taped up near the spare tire. There is 5 wires and they consist of a large black wire, a smaller black wire and then a red, blue and green wire. Are these the wires I'm looking for and if so what color is what? I also thought there should be more then 5 wires. Does this mean I'm not pre-wired for a trailer brake controller?

Thanks!

your owners manual should tell you what color wires are for what...but in my 05 sierra half ton...i have a red wire, yellow, dark green, brown, white, light green, light blue and dark blue. Red is 12v power supply, yelllow-left/turn/stop, dark green is right/turn/stop. brown-taillamps, white-ground, light green-back-up lamps, Light blue- center high stop light, Dark blue-trailer brake

Both of my trucks have 8 wires at the back............ regular 7 wires plus the center high mounted brake light...... IDK what the colors are..... The 1/2 ton they go up in my back fender and my plug is in the bed.... Same with my 3/4....
