Transmission Shifting

Hi

The 93 Chevy 1500 pickup 4.3 with automatic transmission I acquired earlier this year runs and shifts fine while driving, I'm really pleased with it. But, when I shift from neutral to drive or reverse, there is a 3-4 second pause before it goes into gear, after that all is fine. I've made sure the fluid is topped off.

I'm wondering if this could be an inexpensive fix, or should I just learn a little patience before stepping on the gas?

I'd apprecaiet any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks.... Ron

is it doing it only when cold or all of the time? most likely it could use a filter and fluid replacement. transmissions are hydraulic and if the filter is dirty or the viscosity of the fluid is off then it can be slowing the movement of fluid causing a delayed reaction. The other possibility is pump failure, which isn't terribly hard to replace (considering the whole transmission must be removed, but not completely disassembled) but still would not be something you would do until it's really a problem.

Filter and fluid if it hasn't been done in awhile is always a good place to start!

my 97 s10 did that all the time even after i changed the filter and fluid. it even kept up after i put a new tranny it. i just got used to it but when other people drove it they always revved it and then it popped into gear prob not good :D

... regular filter and fluid change is good preventative maintenance work... BUT will rarely ever actually fix any problem that your transmission has developed.... so if you do a pan drop filter and fluid change don't expect the transmission to engage any faster than it is...

... you likely have a line pressure problem ... maybe it can be remedied with a boost valve (Transgo) .. or if worse then likely indicating that the internal transmission pump is getting weaker..

My truck did that same thing when I bought it at 93k miles. It now has 290k and still does it. I just got used to it and it probably has kept me from getting stuck and abusing it.
