08 Gmt 900 Rear Brake Noise

Recommended Posts

Lately I've been noticing a drone/howl noise coming from the rear drum brakes, hard to believe they would be worn out at 55k miles? I looked around a little and not a lot of responses on previous posts? Anything to look out for when I pull the drums off? I had seen mention of a TSB for swedging the drums after removing them?? Should I just clean them up and put on some new drums and shoes? Thanks.

I pulled my rear drums at 30k because they squealing, cleaned them up with brake cleaner which didnt seem to help much.

The pads had maybe 35% left on them, so I'd say you might be ready for rear brakes, if anything a good cleaning.

Mine were pretty grunged.

mine does the same, i haven't looked at them but my last brake inspection says they are okay. My guess is that brake dust is building up inside between the shoes and drum causing them to "hold" longer vibrate and stick which makes the noise or glazing is present on the brakes.

I will pull the drum clean the complete assembly with brake cleaner then take emery cloth and scuff the shoes to remove any glazing and do the same to the drum, clean again and install.
