Considering Going To An External Fuel Pump

Recommended Posts

Hi, love the site so far. I am attempting to get my dad's '88 Chevy 350 TBI running again after it has sat for about a year and a half. The fuel pump is no longer working and I am weighing my options between replacing the in-tank pump and installing an external pump. Between the two I am leaning towards putting the external pump on because from what I've researched so far it seems to be easier and cheaper to go with. Before I made my decision I wanted to get some opinions of those who have done either and those who's automotive expertise is far beyond my own.

Oh and the truck is now only used as a ranch truck and will not be driven a whole lot so that's why I am leaning toward the less expensive option. Thanks!

Is an external that much cheaper?

Because the in-tank one is pretty dang easy to replace.

1- remove bed mount bolts.

2- lift bed.

3-replace fuel pump.

4-reverse order of steps 2 and 1.

5-wipe hands on pants.

Well I decided to drop the tank and replace the in-tank pump on the truck. After looking at everything dropping the tank was the easiest and best option. I'm waiting for the new pump assembly to come in the mail and as soon as it does I hope to have a fully functional truck soon after. Thanks for the reply Wingnut, I began to think no one wanted to respond to me. :D

Oh and by the way originally it looked like the external pump was going to be over $100 cheaper but I found a good deal and it would have just been about $20 cheaper for the external pump.
