That big number on the bottom left on the first picture appears to be the case number of a 4L80E...

 

Is this from the 1998 C3500 on under your user name? If so its most likely a 4L80E.

Number CAST into the case is indeed most likely the PN for the case itself. Looks like it to me. The stamped number on the yellow tag is the serial number of the trans build....it can be decoded for trans build date, etc.

 

The big 3 character number on the yellow tag is a code used to determine what parts go into the trans (Torque converter, extension housing (for 2wd or 4wd), and sometimes other internal parts). In theory, if you're looking for a replacement trans, all you'd need is the model year of the vehicle and the 3 character code as that pretty much defines what is supposed to be 'in the box'.

It's possible that the 3 chracter code was/is used by the motor line operator to pick the correct tranny for the motor he's "dressing". Lots of parts have a 2 or 3 letter code to correspond w/ what the schedule/broadcast sheet (old days) or computer screen nowadays showed.
