High Oil Pressure??!!

Hi Everyone,

 

I love my first truck, just purchased - a 2000 Silverado 5.3 with 18K miles.  Maybe this is normal, but when first started, my oil pressure gauge reads about 60 psi.  Under initial acceleration, it hits 70 psi!!!  It does decrease as the engine warms up, but seems too high for too long to me.  It never goes below 40 psi.  I'm worried about blowing a gasket, or worse.  Any ideas?  Could I have an obstruction or is this normal for this type/year engine?  I live in northern VA (moderate temps and driving loads) and use the appropriate oil weight as called for in the manual.  Thanks in advance for any info or advice you have.

Hmmm.....High Oil Pressure:

 

I wouldn't get tooo scared about it just yet...  But think about the possible causes of high oil pressure.

 

I don't know that super-thin oil would read any higher in pressure than would 5W-30.  In fact, I can't really see what could cause it to be sooooo high other than a defective sending unit or simply an inaccuarate dash gauge.

 

I guess that my only real fear in this case would be that with a reading so high, that in reality you could lose oil pressure almost all together...and still show a falsely high reading.  Suppose you ordinarily see 70 PSI, then suppose you lose 5 qts of oil through a leaky filter. [Okay so I am stretchin it]

 

You are too deaf to hear the knocking sound.  You look at the gauge and see 20 PSI and think "Gee...oil pressure's a little low, but 20 PSI is okay"  BANG.

 

I would change the oil myself this one time.  Making sure that I put on the right filter, right amount of oil etc..Quikie lubes are famous for screwing that up... Then see if you note any changes.  Still reading high?  Change the sending unit, Still reading high?  Get a 3/8 pipe threaded TEE and add a manual oil pressure gauge ($10 at a parts store) and see if it agrees with your dash gauge.  If it disagrees by a large amount...you'll know the gig.  If not?

 

Post on this board again for better help than you will find at a dealer!  Some of the techno types here are smarter than lil Jimmy Neutron!

First off, I have an '02 running Mobil 1 5w30 and run a constant 60 psi oil pressure.

 

A 2000 w/ 18k miles should still be under warranty.

 

I would change the oil myself.  Use 6 qts. and an AC filter.

 

If it is still 70, I would ask the service writer at your dealer.

 

I would consider taking it in and getting the problem documented.

 

He can connect an Ohm-meter to the sending unit and check it out (the acceptable range is in the service/helms manual).

 

I wouldn't do too much troubleshooting on a warantee covered item.  If they say it is not a problem, get them to put it in writing (work order will have complaint and recommended solution).  If for any reason this does not satisfy you, poll the members for the acceptable range and test it yourself.

my 02 5.3L starts out at 60 and goes down to 40psi when hot. My 00 S-10 did the same. I wouldnt worry about it. But if you paranoid hook up an external gauge and test it.  :thumb:

To me, 70 doesnt really sound too high... As a matter of fact I wouldnt worry about it.. Even in my 75 Trans-Am, with an all original 400 I was hitting up to 80 under full gas... The only time to really worry about your oil pressure, (especially in a new vehicle) Is if it ever drops below 40 or so... Just my $.02... Ive never really watched exactly how high my oil pressure in my 4.8 goes... but for some reason 70 sticks out in my mind... :thumb:

My 2000 idles at about 45lbs. when warm. Under frewway driving at 70/75 does around 60lbs. Never had a problem. Don't worry, you are O.K.

I'll see 65-70 psi in my 6.0L after the truck has been sitting all night and I'm cuffing on it a little (3K-3.5K RPM) because I'm just a tadd late for work!!!   LOL

I have never really noticed on my 4.8 at take off, I usually run about 50-60 normal driving! Will try to remember to look at mine in the morning! I wouldnt get too worried at 70 though!

Thanks to all for the great advice!  I really appreciate the feedback.  I won't worry as much, but I will go through the oil change and diagnostic steps as suggested by CapnDean and others just in case.    Cheers - Clutch

Hey Clutch....

 

You made me look at mine.  My 4.8 starts out at around 60 PSI and runs up in the 70's on the Hwy too.

 

I'd say that it's normal for this vehicle...Thanks for making me look at my gauges!

 

I do think that 70 PSI is a bunch when you consider the history of the internal combustion engine.  I always felt that 30 PSI was pretty much a benchmark.

 

But then I also grew up in an era where 180 was optimum operating temp.

    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."    
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.  
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
