Which Winch For My Wench?

Recommended Posts

I am looking for some feedback on Winches for the 1500 series P/u's - Suvs...

Last Friday I took the Avalanche to Eckhart and had a custom front hitch fabbed and installed, and hidden behind the front plate. Weight rated for 10,500 pounds with a 1000 pound tongue weight.

Eckhart is going to build me a light bar and winch plate that can be easily inserted into the front or rear hitch receiver thus allowing it to be removed when not needed and used in either location. I am also having them build me a custom swing away rear multi-carrier for my Jerry-cans, long jack and oversized spare tire. (similar to this: http://www.kenmtnac.com/MC9299GMC.html but off the hitch, and not a replacement bumper)

here are some pictures of the install:

You wont go wrong picking the M8000 winch,it is a beast

thanks.. that's actually the one I was looking at, good to hear.. any issues with it? I had a mile marker brand on my 2000 Silverado and it would bind up all the time.. was a pain in the ass..

None once so ever. I've used it to pull downed trees, limbs, and my truck and it did it all with no problem. Hell it was dragging my truck in park on pavement...

It pulled my truck up and out of this hole sideways with the front end buried.

Only thing i don't like is trying to get the cable to wind on there perfectly, but thats a problem with every winch!

General rule of thumb is that your winch should be for 1 ½ times the weight of the vehicle. The reason of this is that your vehicle weight will most likely be compounded by the media in which you’re stuck (mud, snow, rock, etc.). Also, there’s a good chance you’ll be pulling on an incline, not on a flat surface, adding even more pressure for the winch to bear.

AV curb weight is roughly 6,000 pounds, so you are saying I need 9,000 pound rated winch?

That's about right, for your application I would look at the Warn 9.5ti portable.

If you want to save a little money you could get a Smittybilt winch. They are really good winches, that's what my next one will be. The 8000 lbs. is $299 and the 10,000 lbs. is $399. A lot of rockcrawlers are starting to use these winches because they are inexpensive and reliable. I have the Warn M8000 as well, it's been on the front of 2 jeeps now, it's a good winch and i have no complaints.
