Horn Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Posted

After the second oblivious person in two weeks decided they don't need to stay between the lines of their lane, it is time to upgrade my horn. Unfortunatley the OEM horn is not loud enough to warn off these cell phone-obsessed drivers. Yes, I am ranting....

Anyway, I have two questions regarding this:

1) Where is the stock horn located and what is the easiest way to access and replace it. I remember it was behind the driver side headlight on the GMT800.

2) Any recommendations for a quality loud horn? I was looking at Hella or Wolo. I think the ones with the air compressor and the separate horns might be best. The "bad boy" horn looks interesting. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Go to you tube and type in loud truck horns. A lot of them tell you what kind they have, plus some are pretty funny.

1. Open hood.

2. Stick head under hood.

3. Have assistant push on horn.

4. Remove crap from shorts or replace shorts.

Horn will be located.

Great idea! I was pressing the horn button from inside the cab and then running out to see where the sound was coming from, but by the time I got there it wasn't making a sound anymore........

A double tap on the key fob lock button will get just a chirp. You need a true friend helping to get a real honk.

Head over to your nearest auto wrecking/salvage yard and get the horns from an early 70's Caddy, Buick Park Avenue or Olds 98. These horns are in the 100dB area and are not a lot larger than the factory horn that came on the truck. But make sure you get both horns as they are different tones. They have a single stud that mounts to the bracket and it wouldn't hurt to get the brackets from the donor car.

The OEM horn relay in the truck will be able to handle the power needed for the early horns.
