Lifter tapping

Does anyone know why the 4.8 engine lifter taps during start up. I thought Chevy would have changed the design or something to correct this. Any thoughts on this matter

My 2001 5.3L made a ticking sound that I suspect was lifter noise for about a minute or so after startup.  Made the noise for at least the last 10k miles I owned it, but it never got any worse or affected performance so far as I could tell so I just lived with it.  Also my truck never used any oil at all.

This noise appears mostly I think in the 6.0L and 5.3L engines but you do see a few scattered reports of it happening in the 4.8L also.  So far as I know, GM claims this is normal and causes no damage to your engine.  Who knows.   ???

My parent's ghetto '88 S-10 (spare vehicle) has had a lifter sticking.  I put sea-foam in the oil and it hasn't done it since.  That's my suggestion, it cleans the injectors I think.  I recommend that.  Hope that helps.  O' Reiley's has it, Autozone might also.  Good luck.

sounds like you guys are talikn about the infamous piston slap and  not a lifter. Get used to it, as GM says its normal.

actually it sounds like a cold start knock, two different animals all together.  Cold start knock is problem for all engines, manufacturer's, vehicles, etc...  It'll tick for about 20 seconds and then go away.

Someone knows the technical reason why, I can't really tell you off the top of my head.  It has to do w/ the oil flowing or something along those lines.

GUYS...Don't confuse the lifter tap sound with cold

start knock.  As far as the lifter tap.  Get a cheap

auto stethoscope.  Check the fuel rails and injectors

There is your tapping.  Took mine in for both.....tech

whipped it out and sure enough thats it !

Cold start knock...Normal.....LOL.............geo
