Prestone Extended Live Vs. Dex-cool

Recommended Posts

Has anyone switched from Dex-Cool to Prestone Extended Life (which is said to be good for use in all makes and models)? I am thinking about taking my truck to Jiffy Lube to get the cooling system (power-)flushed and they are using the Prestone Extended Life.

stick with dex-cool...my bro put none dex-cool into his truck and soon after the waterpump started pouring coolant

There is no valid reason today not to use Dex-cool. GM says thats whats best for their system.

Mark.

most automakers use a dex-cool type formula now in their vehicles, because it lasts longer and has better protection

Just because they might be a dex-cool type doesn't mean they're the same. Most have gone to longer life products, but that doesn't mean they interchange.

The only thing multi-vehical formulas are truely good for is cheaper manufacturing and marketing.

Either or is fine.

I'm more concerned about you taking your truck to Jiffy Lube. I wouldn't let those guys work on a valve stem cap.

+1 on going to jiffy lube, i once had them change my oil on an old beater and they charged me for a transmission flush :uhoh: needless to say i told them to pound sand and went back to changeing my own oil

If anyone wishes to switch from one type to another, just make sure you do a complete flush to clear out the traces of the old coolant. That being said, I'd stay with Dex. We've never had a problem with it as long as it is properly monitored and maintained.
