Aftermarket Backup Camera For Long Bed Extended Cab?

Recommended Posts

Any suggestions for an aftermarket backup camera+display for a Silverado extended cab with long bed with factory CD/FM radio (see sig). The tailgate is too far from the driver for any of the really cheap wireless units to work. At least the ones where the transmitter is part of the camera so cannot be extended into the cab.

CubbyCam have very nice GM OEM packages, but they are fairly pricey ($700) and have a fairly involved install since the wiring hardness to the rear view mirror needs replaced. Their universal unit is about $450 with cables etc.

Any other suggestions that work with this extended distance? If the price/install is ok, or the display is better, I can live with a less integrated solution than the GM rearview mirror approach.

i just bought one on ebay for about 60 bucks, its a wired unit, comes with a 3.5 inch screen. havent installed it yet but when i connected the wires to power the video quality seemed to be better than i expected. im just leaving for work but ill see if i can dig up the link to the unit i bought.

the video cable is pretty long, i stretched it out today and with some bends and twists it should be long enough to get from the back of my truck to the dash somewhere, truck is an 06 short box crew cab sierra. im still trying to decide where to mount the camera and how to run the wires and all that good stuff so it may be a little bit before i can post a picture of the video quality of it, but in my work shop with only a couple lights on it seemed to display a clear picture and did well in the not so perfect light situation.

also i made a mistake, i paid 50 not 60, but i guess close to 60 once you figure out the conversion to cdn funds and what not

I installed the peak wireless one on my 2010 Ext Cab Long bed, transmitter didn`t reach into the cab so I ran it(transmitter) under the bed rail as far as it would go. It works pretty good for the money, they do sell a extension wire if you wanted to get the transmiter into the cab.

Check out the kit here..... http://www.gmbackupcams.com/products/

I make them, and sell them myself and have been for close to a year now. I think the price is more than fair, and the quality is fantastic. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for all the replies.

ireland - I was looking at your eBay store for the same item at last weekend! It's a bit crazy here, but I really like the handle option.

I have installed many of these for the customers at my shop. We really don't sell them so people come in with all kinds of gadgets (you can only imagine). My opinion and summary of this topic (as with most electronics) is that you pay for what you get. If you want something crystal clear with a mirror integrated cam then I would spend a lot. If you don't really care then just get a cheapo one.

I installed one the other week where the guy had an integrated display on a rear view mirror that he bought. It was designed specifically for his Explorer but it did not require any modifications to the factory harness. It did come with a separate harness that included power, ground, reverse switch, and video connections and it turned out really nice.

The tailgate latch link above looks really nice tho and does not seem pricey.
