2500hd Vs. 2500

Ok so after so great research and much looking into trucks of the same year I can only come up with a few differences. I have a 04 2500 and comparing it to others of the same year this is what I have found. These are all proven facts and not just theories. The two trucks run the same front torsion bar according to the code sitckers on them, the same rear spring pack checked the same way. The frame on the 2500 non hd is a full 8 in frame all the way to the rear axle then necking down unlike the hd with a full 8 in frame all the way back. Another difference is in the rear end non hd has a semi floater and hd's have a full floater. The hight difference is made up in where the gussets are mounted on the frame not the actuall hight of the frame. So all in all I am finding that in 04 at least the difference is the frame post rear end and rear end it self. The hight difference is only for clearence of the allison and no other reasoning. After all that I am ready for others to chime it and tell me what they have or have not seen. One last thing the hd's do run a heavier transfer case with out autotracks.

if I remember correctly, (and my memory does have holes in it these days...) this 2004 2500 you are talking about is the same truck as the 1500HD in 2005, 2006, & 2007classic ... if so then the GVW is 8600 lbs, while the gvw of the 2500HD is 9200 lbs.

the 2004 2500 came in some cab options, but the 2005 to 2007classic 1500HD reverted to only the crew cab with 6.5 ft box.

and, I believe that the 6L gas engine in these trucks is the LQ4 iron block engine with aluminum heads.

and, I believe another difference is that the 6L gas engine is a different engine between the 2500(1500HD) and the 2500HD, with an iron block engine in the 2500 HD heavy duty.

the early gmt-800 2500 trucks had cast iron heads. all of our fleet units (1500hd/2500) have the cast block. to my knowledge only the ss/denali/vortecmax units go the aluminum blocks...
