Stock Tire Sizes And Rear End Ratios

Hi all,

 

Apologies if this has already been answered but I couldn't find anything. I have a 2001 silverado 1500 4x4 (non Z71) with a 3.73 rear end and calls for 245/75-16 tires. Does anyone know if the optional 265/75-16's came with the 3.73 or was that only available with the 4.10 rear end?

 

Also, I came across something in the owner's manual that said tire chains should not be used on the rear wheels with the 265/75-16's because there isn't enough clearance. I'm guessing that they're not talking about wheel well clearance because it looks like there's plenty of room to me. Anyone have any experience with link chains and clearance issues? what size tire is on the sticker on the driver door?...z71 generally came with thicker tires...my z85 came with 255 stock with 3.42s

It calls for 245/75-16's. I need tires and am thinking of going with 265/75-16's. It had 285/75-16's when I bought it and that was too much tire to push. I put some used 265/70-16's on it (about same diameter as 245/75-16) and it has much more get up and go. I suspect better mileage too. I'm mainly concerned with towing ability and mileage, but I'd like the little bit of extra clearance from a taller tire. I'm actually considering two sets of tires - 265/75-16 highway tread for spring and summer, and 235/85-16 mud terrain or similar for hunting season and winter. I already have the extra wheels. Thoughts? Thanks

if your truck is not programmed for the tire size it will throw your shift points off,speedo and mileage along with a few other things...keep that in mind

I had a set of 235/85/16`s on my 94 Sierra with 3.73`s and they were great, worked excellent in snow, didn`t have the tendancy to ski like the wider tires, my 01 Sierra had 265/75/16`s and 3.73`s when I got it, worked great, like jro909 said you should get your speedo calibrated for the 265`s as it will change things a bit, once set for 265`s you could run the 235/85`s as well as they are the same diameter.

Thanks all. I appreciate the feedback. Any idea on what I should be looking at for cost to have the speedo recalibrated? Is that something any shop can do or is it a dealer only thing?

 

How about chains with 265/75-16's or the 235/85-16's? It sure seems to me that chains should work on all four corners with the 235's as they're pretty narrow.

Dealerships won't do it, de facto legitimizing the need for a custom PCM tuning that will take care of that for you.
