Rear Brakes And Emergency Brakes On My 02 Burb

2500 Surburban 2002 4X4

 

The emergency brakes have never been worth a crap to start since I bought it with 80K on it.

But it passed inspections.

 

Today, it barely passed and I need to do something.

 

I was told this is a $500 repair.

 

What am I looking at here?

In order to get the emergency brakes working again in these trucks with rear disk brakes it can cost up to $500

 

The rear disc brakes on these 2001-2007 works with an inner brake shoe that works the emergency brakes, which is in addition to the actual disc brake pads which are for normal braking.

 

 

These systems were not designed well and the emergency brakes would be worn out even if not used.

The rear rotor have an inner drum in which these small emergency brake shoes go.

 

If you are lucky, I guess, you might get away with just new emergency brake shoes.

Which are about $135 plus labor

 

If the drum/rotor is bad, then you might as well do the pads also and then it bumps up to the 4-5 dollar range

It sounds like you need to first assess what is wrong and better understand what is included in your $500 repair. Your issue may be as simple as adjusting the brake shoe. If it's similar to the 1500 Yukon, there is a star wheel which expands or contracts the shoe. If the shoe lining is still in tact, you likely need a simple adjustment. You'll have to pull the rear rotors to make the adjustment but this shouldn't cost more than an hour of labor at a shop.
