P0449 Question

I have and '08 Avalanche that the bumper to bumper warranty expired just a few days before the check engine light came on. I had the truck scanned for codes and the ever popular P0449 was present. The problem was traced to a internal short in the evap vent valve. The valve was replaced, the code was cleared and all is fine now. I was even lucky enough to get the repair good-willed. After talking to the service technician and doing some research here, if I am understanding correctly, the purpose of this system is to maintain a sealed system for the fuel. This system is monitored by the computer and it allows no vapors to pass into the atmosphere unless they are filtered, in a effort to protect the ozone  . Another part of my understanding is that when the system fails, it has no effect on drive-ability or gas mileage. Under dusty conditions replacement could be required as frequent as every 2-3 years, which seems like a hassle for more purpose than an unsubstantiated belief. I was wondering if this system could be fooled into thinking that it was functioning properly when the valve or filter fails. I live in an area where emission tests are not an issue. I miss the old simple cars without sensors or computers.

You may have just got a bad one the first time. I just replaced mine and all it cost was 23 bucks for the valve and 20 minutes of my time. Very easy repair, no reason to try and find a way around it at that price.

You are correct on dusty conditions causing this, I work at a coal port and in fact we relocate the breather part of the system up into the engine compartment, but recently stopped because as you said it does not effect drive ability. Another cause of this is topping the tank off.

I have no answer for your "tricking" the system.
