I Want Posi Trac On My Truck. Help Me Figure It Out.

I have a 1990 Extended Cab Silverado 2WD. I do quite a bit of hunting and I cannot get into some of the places I hunt with my truck because if it is the slightest bit muddy I get stuck. I have never had a 4WD and never had this much trouble when going off-road before.

If I were to get a locker, posi-trac or Eaton Truetrac rear end would it help me from getting stuck so easily?

Are these a complete rear end swap or are they components I can add to my rear end to upgrade it? I would really like to keep this truck for a long time but I need to get to the remote areas when hunting.

if youhavent done so already then invest in a good set of tires. theyll help you out quite a bit, as for a locker, its a gm rear end and you should be able to find an assortment of lockers and lsd's for it. also you may be able to swap over a rear end from a newer truck with a g80 locker. not sure how much work would be involved in the swap but if its not too hard then it would likely be cheaper than buying an aftermarket locker. if you type in your truck model and year into google and type locker after it it should give you some options as to what to buy, i didnt notice if you had a half ton or if its a heavier truck otherwise id have checked for you through google.

I feel your pain. I had an 88 2wd pickup till I was 19. My GF now Fiance lived on a mountain and I had to go there to see her most times, and that freaken thing would get stuck in a mud puddle. It was always dissapointing to be sitting on the middle of a hill to look back and only see one wheel spinning. I had enough of that thing, and as soon as I got a better job I bought an 05 Z71. Anyhow if you like the truck I say go for it. With a locker and a good set of tires I bet it will go good.

cheapest & easiest thing to do is put a lock right locker in it. No gear set up required, and it will work awesome.

Probably run ya around 350-400 bucks

Never heard of that. Have any more info on one?

Also check Summit, Jegs, etc. it replaces the guts of your existing carrier, takes me about 30-45 minutes to install one

I've had one in 2 diff trucks now,and they work awesome, letting me go places in 2wd that everyone else had to use 4wd to get thru. It does have some minor quirks that take getting use to, but once you are use to it, it's second nature. It wil lock the rear up tight enough that in both mf my trucks, when making a sharp turn, if you raise engine rom more than 100, it WILL chirp the inside tire or you will be making the turn faster than you can straighten the tires back up. But if you maintain speed and don't accelerate thru the turn, it won't. Normal turns are no big deal, it's just tight turns like u-turns and such.

TRCM,

That looks like it is what I am looking for. There are so many options available and it is sifficult to know what is best. Should I be concerned with durability on it? Either way it will be what I will be looking to purchase now.

Thanks,

Mike

most lockers are fairly durable. you buy a name brand and itll last you a long time. just do proper diff fluid changes and you wont have an issue. alot of our trucks came with an eaton locker that works great.

theres a lot of junkyards around me and there are a shit load of gmt 400s with the rear ends on them ready to be stripped... you should find a junkyard.

I don't think you will be as happy with the time and money spent on a locker, as you would a good set of all terrains or m/t tires. When encountering wheelspin on my truck the rear end will slide to the lowest end of any incline you are on, because you are trying to push two helpless front wheels. Both rear tires spinning has F&^%ed me a few times this winter out on the farm. Just my 2 cents, you do what you want with it. Good luck!

I will never own another truck or SUV without one. My experience is just the opposite, one tire spinning, you slide sideways, both, you just move. Tires do make a difference tho, but not enough. Good tires will let you go farther, but when you get stuck, you are still stuck, and usually worse cuz the "good" tires dug deeper holes.

As far as durability, I ran one in my old dodge truck. I ran that locker with 40" TSL's and 400 or so hp for close to 12 years, and it never failed me, and still looked for the most part brand new when I sold the axles.

And this was a 2wd?

NEVER USE A SPOOL FOR STREET USE. you "will wear tires" like you've never seen before! you need the differential gears in there "for all turns" . just get a rear axle posi trac from the junk yard or install an auburn carrier in your housing
