Stuck Lug Nut

Recommended Posts

Being a nice Saturday, I decided to go ahead and change my oil and rotate my tires.  I was halfway through rotating my tires when one of the lugnuts got stuck.  It just locked up about halfway through losening it.  I tried quite a bit to losen it more and then tried to tighten it back down but it won't budge.  Has this happened to anyone before and does anyone know what I should do?

Did you get it on or off???

I was trying to get it off when it got stuck.  I've heard that you shouldn't use lubricants on your lugs.  Heard it could cause them to losen while driving.  Do you know this to be true?  Might have to try it anyway and then clean 'em off good.

Don't supposed you have access to a die to chase the threads? If you really have a lot of patience, you can try dressing up the threads with a fine file. Dremel tool with cutoff wheel might also work for cleaning up the threads -- you'd have to be very pretty careful tho. Also, applying anti-sieze might work. All of the above assumes that the stud is straight. If it's bent ...?

i work at a tire store and see this all the time. You have to break the stud in two by forcing the nut to turn. May have to put a pipe over your rachet. Then replace the stud and nut :uhoh:

How much is it to replace the nut and stud?  I've tried getting leverage with a pipe on my ratchet.  Big mistake.  I HAD a great Blackhawk socket set my grandfather gave me.  Snapped the ratchet.  I should have know better than to try it with the ratchet and instead use a wrench or braker-bar.  Hindsight is always better than foresight :uhoh:   Gotta learn from the mistakes though.  I figure I'll take it into the shop tomorrow and let them deal with it.  Thanks for the help though.  If anyone knows how much it will cost let me know.

If your trck is still under warranty, then the dealer should cover it.

If not, I'd try to fix it myself.  You can get a stud removal tool at an auto parts store, and then order a stud from the dealer.  Niether should cost too much.  If the nut is still stuck on the stud, I guess you need to get it off before you can try replacing the stud though.  :uhoh:

I don't really know how you can do that though unless you can cut it off if you have enough room to work.  A dremel tool with a cut off wheel should be able to cut the nut so you can get it off, if you have the room to use it.

Stud removal tool: Big Freakin Hammer :uhoh:

Studs are easy to replace if you have air tools. If not i would take it to mechanic.

We charge 42$ where i work. (NTB/SEARS auto)

What air tools would I need?  I'm always up to buying new tools, just give me a few tips and let me know what tools are needed. :uhoh:
