Torque Management....

Recommended Posts

Hi again.  i just got my truck back last week from having the whipple supercharger installed and WOW, what a difference.  The pull the engine has now is amazing.  and with the 4.56 gears and 285/75/16's on the pavement, it throws your head back pretty hard when it downshifts.  However, i see you all talking about Torque management and how it affects shifting.  Man, it is extrememly noticeable with the supercharger.  I noticed it somewhat before, but it is very evident now.  How can I get rid of it?  I live in so cal.  is there anyone in my area who can remove that from the computer?  thank you.....

Ok, This may sound really dumb but is either of these things something that anyone can buy or do you have to use a computer on your truck......How much money would this cost....I dont think these trucks have all that much take off power either....I have a 2001 2500 HD with the 6.0 motor and you cant even spin the tires with it unless you power brake it....

I'm guessing you have a auto my 2500HD with 5spd will eat my 285's until I let off it...My mods are small so they don't amount to anything....KN Intake Assembly, True Duals, Jet Chip...thats it and my truck will rock and roll

Yes I have an auto trans....These things could not smoke the tires if you had too......You can power brake them but that is not too good for the brakes...I wish someone could give us an answer on how to and how much money it would cost to get rid of the torque management......Is this something you can ask the dealer to do in there service department????

You can delete the torque management and do other tuning yourself with the instrument found at the following site. Go to:http://www.runninwiththedevil.com/

I installed the Whipple on my H2 with the 6.0 and the torque management was horrendous!!  Whipple doesn't have a fix, so I sent my PCM to Ed Wright this last Monday and got it back yesterday (Wed) and he fixed it so that it runs like it is supposed to!  WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!   :D

What all can you do with a TechII??? Who has 'em?

It varys per vehicle and per PCM parameters.  Your local GM dealer would have them.  Otherwise, unless you spend a lot of time on your knees, you can't buy a new TechII on the open market.  Also, you'd be out of the loop for upgrades/updates that GM constantly puts out for all their various vehicles.  You can buy them second hand.  I occasionally check EBay for them, but even used, they are still around $3,000.

See above for the TechII, but for LS1Edit, check out www.carputing.com  LS1Edit is now a readily available program and all you need is a PC (preferrably a laptop) to install it on as well as the cable to interface between the data port and your PC that is sold with the program.

Last I checked they had;

LS1 Edit for LS1's and the Vortec 4800, 5300, and for most 6000's.  They were in Beta testing mode with LS1 Edit for the 8.1 at the time I was exchanging e-mails with them.

I think you can only buy it from Carputing though.

Just wondering if there is anyway that this can be done without spending so much money......Is it anything that the dealer can or even will do for you?????Thanks, Joe

Does anyone here actually have first hand experience with this software?  It really looks inviting, but I don't drag my truck on a regular basis, not am I changing the height anytime soon, still in school.

I use AutoTap all the time.

U use a TechII when I get my hands on it.  They are expensive and most dealers only have two maybe three in service circulation at a time.  So you kinda have to fight to get one.

If GM is to service the calibrations in the Allison, then there has to be a way for the TechII to access it.  Hence, all three tables should be accesible.  We'll see, when I get my hands on one

From somewhere, credit to whoever.

--------------------------------------------------------------- -----

With the GEN III VS engine, Torque Management is a function of the PCM that reduces engine power under certain conditions, included in which, is the transmission upshifts and downshifts.

Torque Management is performed for the following reasons:

1. To prevent overstress of the powertrain components.

2. To prevent damage to the vehicle during certain abusive maneuvers.

3. To reduce engine speed when the IAC is out of the normal operating range.

The PCM monitors the following sensors and engine parameters to calculate engine output torque;

- Air/Fuel ratio

- Mass Air Flow

- Manifold Absolute Pressure

- Intake Air Temperature

- Spark Advance

- Engine Speed

- Engine Coolant Temperature

- A/C Clutch Status

The PCM monitors the torque converter status, the transmission gear ratio, and the engine speed in order to determine if torque reduction is required. The PCM retards the spark as appropriate to reduce engine torque output if torque reduction is required. The PCM. also shuts off the fuel to certain injectors to reduce the engine power In the case of an abusive manoeuvres.

Instances when engine power reduction is likely to be experienced, are:

a. During transmission upshifts and downshifts.

b. Heavy acceleration from a standing start

c. The IAC is out of the normal operating range.

d. When the driver is performing stress-inducing (abusive) maneuvers such as shifting into gear at high throttle angles or shifting the transmission from reverse to drive to create, a rocking motion. The driver is unlikely to notice the torque management actions in the first two instances.

The engine power output will be moderate at full throttle in the other two cases. The PCM calculates the amount of spark retard necessary to reduce the engine power by the desired amount. For example the PCM disables the fuel injectors for cylinders 1, 4, 6, and 7 in the case of an abusive maneuvers.

This is the issue, it has been getting worse since '98, more and more conservative. The only cure is to "fix the chip".

The more mods you do, the more this becomes a daemon on your shoulder [or butt]
