Silverado Gmt-900 Replacement Battery Options...

Well, recently my truck (2008 Silverado crew cab) left me stranded, and I had to get a jump start to get my truck started. I got the battery tested at Autozone, and it tested bad immediately. The AC Delco battery gave me a little over 3 years. Anyway, after doing some research online, I saw that the recommended battery for our trucks was at least $160, with very low specs. The original only had 615 cranking amps! Autozone computer came up with this battery as a direct replacement:

I decided to look for another battery that would fit the truck, and have much better specs.

I measured the battery tray area, and I went to Autozone to find a battery that would fit in the compartment. This is what I found:

The battery fit perfectly fine (Duralast Gold 34-DLG) . 800 CCA , top and side post terminals, 3 year free replacement warranty and a total of 8 years warranty.I had to get a universal battery tie down, but that was not big deal. , The posts are far enough from the fender support bracket that I don't have to worry about anything. The posts are on different sides on this new battery, but they worked just fine. Just install the (+) and (-) like it was before, and the cable will end up with some slack, that will not hurt anything. If you are looking for a replacement battery for your truck, be sure to check this one out (or at least this battery size) before spending all that cash on the direct replacement battery.

Interstate also carries batteries for the GMT900 trucks and they have a 770 cca capacity. The battery is an MTP-85

We replace a lot of DuraLast batteries at our shop and they are only typically 2-3 years old when we get customer complaints. We carry both AC Delco and Interstate batteries and the Interstates have shown to have a much longer life in service.

I hear ya. I have heard good things about interstate batteries. The main reason I went with Autozone's Duralast is that I can find an Autozone pretty much anywhere I go. They are also open long hours, even on Sunday's. Interstate retail shops are not prominent enough in South/Central Texas to have that option. Also, my mother is a manager in one of the Autozone's in San Antonio, so the manager at the store I got it at was nice enough to give me a discount. I know batteries are like oil, and we each have a preference on the best one. Duralast Gold batteries have always worked well for our cars. I figured I'd post my results so that others can at least have an option when they need to find a replacement battery. :D Like I said, use the same group battery I mentioned, find it in your favorite brand, and you should be good to go.

I have a Optima 34R. The size 34 batteries fit great, are readily available and cost way less. Good choice!

Cool. In my opinion, GM should have used this style battery in our trucks. I hope others see this thread and consider it before replacing the OEM battery. Thanks for sharing.

Consumer reports gives Die Hard Advanced Gold top honors in cold cranking amps, life of battery, and reserve capacity. I just baught one....so far so good....day one. 3 year instant replacement warranty too. Die Hard also makes a Platinum series now with 4 year instant replacement. Its a little pricey, but the best stuff usually is.
