My Fix On My Silverado Electrical Problem

buddy of mine had a similar issue and he took the ground cable off the frame, grinding the shit out of the frame to make a clean connection and hooked it back up. never had a problem since.

I'm unsure what kind of pics everybody wants to see. Basicly I took two 4 gauge cables and ran them seperate (one to the frame and the other to the alt) from the battery. Very simple. Only difference is I used 4 gauge cable on the frame cable and I know my connections are bulletproof considering I installed them.. I took some pics but the cable itself is wireloomed to look more OEM. The actual cable is the same size as the wireloom itself.I couldn't get a precise pic of the framerail connection(too dark), but its pretty straightforward. This fix is actually easy with just having the right cable/connections and a little time. In my opinion it was worth every second without having to doubt whether I will encounter the same problems I have been for the past year. However it's a shame I couldn't get GM to fix this under the 3 year warranty.... :)

most of the older trucks arent. Really didn't matter to me, but since the oem cable came loomed, I figured I'd keep it that way on my new cable

Was this wire from a amp kit or is it a battery cable kit wire? Is there any different between the two as if in example, will the amp kit wire handles less current draw than a normal battery cable wire?

Either will work as long as it is rated to handle the load you expect to use it for. I believe on amp wire it actually states to be battery cable. I wouldn't go with anything smaller than 4 gauge on your battery cable though.

glad to hear if you got it, my 07 dims the lights and whatnot often, and i know that it should not do that with a 165a alternator.... i might do this one rainy day.

 

i can get some 4 guage welding ground cable cheap from work, too:) i love working at a hardware store

Update: Almost a month and still no issues. I think I can actually say I finally fixed the problem.

 

 

Is your fix still working? It all just started on my 2007.

First I had it momentarily shut down and cycle all the gauges and door locks and shut of headlights at highway speed. It came back on its own.

Now having trouble starting. Leave it for a while or turn key second or tenth time and it fires right up.

 

I've changed the battery, and it was good for a few days now I have the starting issue again. I've checked the wires and they seem fine? Mega fuse is good, ground to block is good, Connections to mega fuse and fuse box is good. ????

Anyone know if this will fix the radio / instrument light dimming /"Engine Hot AC turned off" / "Check Air Bags"/ "Check Left Rear Tire" crazyness?

I've been dealing with similar electrical issues with my '07 lately. 3 trips to the dealer later and I think we've finally figured it out. What I thought was an issue with the crimped negative cable connection at the battery was actually a 'strained / stretched positive cable'. Dealer 're-routed' my positive cable and 3 days later, so far so good. Hope thats the end of it.

Not to burst your bubble and I hope you're problem is fixed... Don't go to far in the woods without a budding in a Dodge. From experience 3-days in not long enough to tell - just enough to make it really fustratingnext time it happens.

 

Anyway, went out this morning and the horn beeped twice when I unlocked the doors with the key fob. I then purposly just turned my key to the "on" position not to start. To my surprise the radio clock was already reset t0 12:00. I then turned on the head lights and heated seats and checked for voltage drop accross my cables with the engine still not running but key on. From positive battery to other side of mega fuse zero voltage drop. From negative battery to block and from neg battery to Alternator casing 0.4volts.

 

With truck running the .04 volts went to .08volts. It was dark so I couldn't get right on the block end of the cable but was making good connection with the block and Alt casing. I never tried from Positive battery to frame or body but will the next time.

 

I'll be checking my grounds next including one under drivers door. MAybe even change the ground cables. Its fustrating when I can't trust my truck.

    • It added a cost layer to an already limited production supply. True that. 
    • Swap costs and supply/demand balance. When a barrel comes out of the ground the entire range of products are present but not all at the same percentage.    Breakdown of Refined Products The following table summarizes the approximate output from a standard 42-gallon barrel of crude oil: Product Type Gallons per Barrel Percentage of Total Gasoline 20 gallons 45% Diesel Fuel 9 gallons 21% Other Products 13 gallons 31%   Most of that diesel figure is 'straight run' or cut from the barrel. Gasoline 'cut from the barrel runs 0 to 20% at the crude. So in the crude unit there is more diesel the gasoline, usually.  The full refining experience however gives the tabled values. Ego there is half the diesel than gasoline after the 'first crack' That could be an FCC unit, or Isomax or....   Those units take heavy products and break the big ones into little ones. Those numbers are harder to get hold of but directionally it ends up the same.    Really light products are very profitable. Ethylene and Propylene to name two. Those are cracked from slightly heavier feeds like NG and Propane and Ethane. The cracker harshness determines the feed for distillation. Those feeds come from less profitable products like diesel and gasoline.    So...there is a swap cost. How much market is there TODAY and what crude am I running TODAY..... what is my process capable of always.    There is this as well. The USA uses allot more gasoline than it does diesel so in the cracker the process is tilted to gasoline production which....limits supply of diesel. OTR uses the most and it has different requirements than automotive and agricultural.  Limiting auto products.    You are correct however. It is less refined, just less of it. Allot less. 
    • Most thermostatically controlled ATF systems use a 'wax' pill just like the one in your water thermostat. They work on the expansion volume of the wax and the pill is constructed in such a way as to limit the travel to remain within that range. This means it has an opening temperature often called the 'cracking temperature' and a fully open temperature. For whatever reason oil is designated by it's fully open temperature and water by it's cracking temperature.    Between the two it the "Regulating Temperature" The entire range is about 20 F from closed to open. In your example the lower limit, opening point of 145 F then has a fully open temp of 165 F and a throttling temperature of 155 F.    Thing is, the throttling temperature needs two things to work properly. Enough system load high enough to reach the minimum and a heat sink (cooler/exchanger) large enough to prevent any load applied from exceeding the fully open temperature.    If your system exceeds the fully open temperature it is screaming MORE COOLER.    Here is the silly part of the whole thermostat system where the oil is cooled/heated by the radiator. Nothing is flowing to that system until the oil temperature reaches the cracking temperature unless it is equipped with a minimum flow bypass orifice or a bypass built into the seating surface of the plunger. That system meant to get it up to temp quicker isn't doing a thing until WORK drives if from ambient to cracking temp. One a cold winter day, like zero F, it may never get hotter than about 110 F. Sometimes not even that.    People forget or are young enough to not know that until this millennia transmissions were cooled by the radiator cold tank alone and without a thermostat at all.  In the 50's they weren't even cooled. OEMs learn everything the hard way.    When an OEM tells you the trans "Works best" between 175 F and 220 F it means works best for THEM. The transmission thermostat is fuel play. If you watch you trans temps like I do you will learn that it may take a hundred miles if you are not towing and not driving more than say 55-60 mph on a zero F day to even reach 120 F and it might sit there all day if it's colder. Yet if functions perfectly over about 100 F. It may need to get a bit warmer for the fuel and spark maps to go without an multiplier.    Worry more about too hot. Use a cooler large enough to put that thermostat in range.         
    • Around 2008 if memory serves they took sulfur out. That was when diesel went up.
