bluwest Posted April 23, 2011 Posted April 23, 2011 Are their tracking numbers or serial numbers on OEM rims from GM? I know a guy who wants to sell me some new rims with rubber on them and I just want to make sure they are not stolen at all. Are the rims serials if any attached to say a dealers vehicle information? I know there has been some issues in my city with theft and I want to make sure I am in the clear but also don't want to get pulled over and have the police take them because they are stolen. I mean the guy wants $3000 for them, so not too far off the mark but still want to be sure. Anyone with any ideas?

No factory tracking numbers, but may be numbers added by 3rd party id marking companies. Most only mark glass, but I recall one a couple of years ago that marked all easily removable high demand parts, like wheels, air bags, and some body panels. Have not heard anything about it since then though.
Ianf Posted April 24, 2011 Posted April 24, 2011 If there are TPMS sensors in the wheels, they all have a unique FCC ID number that could be tracked back to a vehicle that originally had them. But I doubt anyone would track them as there are four on each factory vehicle.

Also does the dealer that had the rims and tires have the ability to know if they were from their dealership? And if so how hard would it be and what would the numbers on the rims be listed on?

If they did, they would haved asked me for the VIN when I had to replace one on the girl friends car the other week. They would have also asked for the old FCC ID number to show it was no longer in service. I would imagine that FCC ID number is used to identify the sensor by the BCM for TPMS.

So is it safe to say then that there is no way to track tires and rims?
