Torsion Bars Settling?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Over a year ago I put 285/70 R17 BFG All Terrain KO's on my truck and cranked the torsion bars up a little and trimmed my mudflaps. Every once in awhile, mainly in reverse my tires would rub the mudflaps. Now I cranked them up more and almost have them all the way and they want to still rub more and more. I put 3/4" blocks in the back to get the rake back like they come from the factory when I first adjusted the bars. I wonder if I should buy an aftermarket leveling kit to get more front end lift, and to get the shock absorber extensions I know that will make it ride much better than now. Any clues on what might be happening or what kit I should buy? I know there are many posts on leveling kits but I want a good cheap kit. I know those words are rarley in the same sentance "good" and "Cheap" but I thought I would give it a shot.

It is my understanding that if you crank the t-bars that over time they will settle.

As you increase the tension by cranking they will eventually fail from the increased tension.

Please note that I am not an expert; but this is what I have learned / remember from reading several message bases such as this and magazines.

It is my understanding that you would do better to buy a new set of keys vs cranking but then you run into problems with the stock shocks not having long enough shafts and not having the proper amt of travel.

A visit / consult with a suspension person will provide you a wealth of knowledge so that you can make some informed decisions.

As I am not one of those, just read a whole lot. Perhaps somebody with a bigger knowledge base will chime in get ya the info you need.

Good Luck with your problem.

That is a possibility but also remember the farther you crank the t-bars it sucks the front tires farther under the front of the truck possibly causing your tires to rub in places they may not have before. easiest way is to measure the truck on level ground and right it down somewhere, maybe the owners manual and the date too. Down the road a simple tape measure will tell you what's up. Leveling keys do the same thing as cranking the bolt underneath. With the leveling keys you don't have to crank in that bolt, they come with the hex offset from the factory one so you don't have to "crank" that bolt. Installing the new keys twist the t-bars just by installing them therefore giving you lift.
