Thought It Was Valve Noise Boy Was I Wrong!

Well its been a while since I was on the board.

When I first got my truck I posted the following below on someone else topic :) ...

I know this thread is a couple of weeks old but I am reviving it.

First Hello to all, I am a newbie on this forum and to the silverado world.

Bought a 09 silverado four door 2wd, 5.3 with the six speed tranny. I like the truck so far but have that nagging valve rattle.

Couple of questions.

First the dealership was like, " boy you can hear really good, we cant hear hit." Idiots

When I am sitting still in neutral and rev it up it doesnt rattle.

Why do I get it all the time but only sometimes on start up.

Is this rattle bad for the motor?

I plan to run synthetic oil but is that the only way to fix the problem?

Do we need to come together with a class action suit?

Why wouldnt GM run Synthetic from the factory if this is a common problem?

Is the rattle from that 5-30 oil weight? Would a thinker oil just void the warranty or will it help?

I am really pissed about this and am getting a bad taste in my mouth from GM

Any advice would be great.

Thanks t

Well after three visists they finally figured out that I have "Pipe Ring" . they examined my exhaust and found a clamp in the middle of the truck that was cocked and leaking... There is a bulletein on this... Once the clamp comes in I will get the bulletein info for you all. "pipe ring" is when the walls of the exhaust rattle... Nothing they will fix. But I am glad to know my motor is fine.

Just for the record I run Valvoline Full Synthetic Max Life

Actually kind of funny that you mentioned a rattle. I had a similar thing where at 1500 rpm in 1st gear OR at 1500 rpm in any gear when the TQ convertor was locked it would rattle. Found that one of the heat sheild had rusted a bit where the bolt holds it to the manifold and it was rattling around. Took the bolt off placed a washer to hold it better on the manifold, and have not heard it since.

Hmmm!!!!

Gotta do my oil change tomorrow I will check it out. It sounds like it is coming from the driver side header area. They replaced my leaking clamp.
