Computer Networking Inquiry

I've got 6 computers in my LAN at home and they are all running Win2K.  W/ my oldest computer (first one I got) I've got no problems w/ surfing the net on it.  But, w/ my two newer computers I can't access some web pages.  I tried messing w/ the security settings, nothing, I got all the windows updates for them, still nothing, uninstalled IE and re-installed, still nothing.  Anyone have any ideas?  GM-Trucks works fine for it, but my home page (www.mudcrazy.com) won't load on either one.  My sisters say that there computers won't work on some sites as well and that ICQ doesn't work for them.  They both are running IE 6.0.  I've got to check on the newest computer that I got for my sister's b-day friday and see if that has the same problem.  I suspect it does.  Anyone have any clue what may be causing this?

hmmm,

First question. Are all the computers trying to access the internet at the same time?

What kind of "hub" are you using?

Do you get any error messages?

Is file / print sharing turned on for all the computers accessing the internet. Internet connection sharing?

Did you name all the computers the same? The workgroup name of the computer needs to be the same in order for sharing.

Any other info would be helpful.

1: Not all of them, but it will be a few on at once.

2: I'm using a 10/100 8 port hub, not sure of the name brand, got it at best buy.  It's blue if that helps.

3: No error message it will just get to finding site and never go

4: Yes, the file/print sharing is turned on, I have no problems printing to my laser printer off of all the computers in the network.  And the printer is on the same computer as the one that will work for all web pages.

5: All the computers have unique names and are all in the "Home" networking group.

It may be computer related because when my friends bring over there computers for some gaming they can get online just fine when they plug in.

This may be a pain, but for troubleshooting purposes, connect each computer individually and then check the webpages. For the ones that don't work you atleast know it's per machine and can fix it at that point.

Here's the network hub (netgear 8 port hub)

By connect individually do you mean hook up the DSL modem to each individually?

Right now I've got my compaq PIII 450 running as the server.  It has the DSL modem, hub, and printer hooked up to it.

I was just thinking, if it's a software problem how would I remedy that?  My friend thought it was because javascript wasn't loading properly.

I don't think it's a hub problem because they can see some pages.

As far as javascript, it very well could be. I think there is a thread here somewhere where I helped someone out with a javascript error.

Yes, hook up the DSL modem to each computer individually and try browsing. This will eliminate trying to fix something that isn't broken. If it happens to be computer / software related per that machine, you should be able to fix it right there.

If it isn't, then you know it has to do with either the settings or the connection to the server.

Make sure you read thru the Netgear instructions as well.

Yeah, I've yet to do that.  I just got it saturday and hooked it up yesterday.  I ran out of space in my 5 port so it was time to upgrade.  I'll look around microsofts website to check out problems w/ java and see what they have for fixes.

Its not the hub or network...you are online and running on all...its not a "sometimes" proposition.....does Win2k come with the JAva runtime?  XP doesnt I dont think...have to download and install....if that was the problem the web site or Windows would make you aware that it wasnt installed...you need to forget about having 6 computers and a network and do what was mentioned above...get them set up individually first.

I agree with Newbie ( I know, I know). A hub is just a dumb device, and doesn't know or care what it is passing for traffic. When you are on a computer that cannot connect to, let's say the mudcrazy page, can you ping www.mudcrazy.com? Or is it just certain parts of the page that don't load? I assume all of the machines are pointing to the same ISP.........and it's not some screwy DNS deal.

Well, had some problems last night trying to set it up, things were very slow going so I pulled the new hub and put the old one in and things picked up.  Nothing to do w/ the web, just w/ accessing drives through out the network, they would inch along.  I was looking in the IE setup and it showed that java was enabled, but who knows.  I can't quite find the problem w/ it and spent a few hours searching around microsoft to find something, a glimmer of hope.

My buddy's stopping by tonight to pick up his digital camera so I'll see if he wants to mess w/ the computer some more.

The Forum rules state that.............. "Anyone agreeing with a NewbieZ71 quote MUST place the comment in BOLD as well as ITALICS.  Since this event happens infrequently, if ever, all members should make a concerted effort to acknowledge the event for all to see"....

Hey newbie, do you have a link to where I can get the java stuff (and no, I don't want a link to starbucks).  I'll try installing that since I have a feeling that my problem is the computer software and not the network, otherwise I wouldn't be able to go anywhere online.  Other than that snafu, the network has been great.  Aside from my friend complaining that he couldn't "find" our LAN game, then I look at his computer and he screwed w/ all the game settings.  Some people.
