Rim Issues Help

Ok I am new to the site and am having a issue. I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 hd that is not lifted or anything like that and im looking to put rims on it. Most websites are saying I can not put a 20X10" rim and I need to put a 20X9" What I want to know is where is the issue going to be (ex: in the wheel well or fenders) and can I put the 20X10"rims on without and issue without putting a lift on the truck. Another thing i want to add is im not puting a big tire on the rims.
