Ac Issues

Hey folks...sorry to bother with this....

So on the way home from a trip this afternoon, after stepping on it to pass someone, my ac stopped working...fan on, fresh air coming out. Thinking the compressor may be stuck or a bad fuse/switch, I pulled over to check under the hood. What I found as I slowed was a bad ticking, knocking sound coming from the compressor. When I shut off the air, the noise stopped. The belt was still attached and stayed attached for another 2 hours while we drove home. The pulley seems fine, but the clutch(?) piece on the front of the pulley is sort of hanging. Also, oil seems to have blown out from somewhere. I have not gotten down to put hands on yet, but I'm just asking for thoughts...Is it possible this is just a clutch issue or is the compressor and thus the system shot?

Thanks for the info

OK, upon futher checking, the front "flange" in front of the compressor belt pulley is what is extremely loose (hanging). What appeared to be oil blown out is now hardened and smells and feels like melted belt (hardened tar-like). The belt does show signs of scraping/chaffing. When the air (and compressor) is off the pulley spins fine. When the compressor is activated, it clicks on, however the center of the compressor, nutted area, barely spins...one rev per 30 seconds.

Any thoughts on what I need? I'm trying to determine if I do the parts swap and hand the truck over for the vac and fill or what...

Thanks again
