Oil Pressure Question For 6.0l Owners

Recommended Posts

I just bought a Sierra 3500 HD with a 6.0L and after the engine has warmed up the oil pressure will drop to around 25 at idle. Under acceleration it will go up to around 45-50. The truck has 1500 miles on it and the oil has been changed at 500 miles. I'm just asking because the truck will idle a little rough when its sitting at 25 - 30 lbs. My 2006 Sierra 1500 with the 5.3L will idle at 40 and jump to 60 under acceleration. Obviously they are different motors but is this normal for the 6.0L ?

Mine does the same, no matter if I have conventional or synthetic oil in it, but I use 10w-30 and it idles about 30-35 psi. Also the idle is so rough because of the cam, they try to make it as mild as they can at an idle but still produce good power through the power band, that's why it idles rougher than your 5.3L

That explains it perfectly - thanks for the info

My owner's manual says the following pg10-10 "Viscosity Grade SAE 5W-30 is the best viscosity grade for the vehicle.Do not use other viscosity oils such as SAE 10W-30,10W-40,or 20W-50". As far as temperature goes the chart shows using 5W-30 up through 100 degree's.GM powertrain website explains the use of 5W-30 due to the solenoid that controls oil pressure on the phaser.I wonder if using the wrong oil would effect the solenoid and the phaser, this also effects the camshaft.

A 5W-30 and a 10W-30 are both 30 wt oils at operating temp. The only difference is at cold start up where one is a 5W oil and the other is 10W oil (thicker). 5W-30 oils show improved low temperature characteristics for faster starting and quicker flow to critical parts.

I was reading an article on the future oils, 0W-0

I have to say mine does the same. Some times the gauge will fluctuate a bit. That may just be the electronics. I would still like to hook up a mechanical gauge one of these days.

Same cold weather symptoms.

2005 GMC Sierra Denali 117K

1) oil low - don't have that problem change when instrument cluster says to, full synthetic

2) faulty gauge - had all replaced

3) Oil Pressure Sending Unit- replaced no change in symptoms

4) Oil Pressure Sending Unit filter- nt on this model, 6.0L

5) O-ring - scheduled repair

6) Oil Pump - only happens on cold mornings, so not mechanical.

down to the last two scenarios; oil tube pickup o-ring.

Per Bobby Likis, of Bobby Likis Car Clinic, who has done several lately, if it's dependent on the temp it's not mechanical (the oil pump). Tuesday March 1 appointment.

Update, o-ring issue fixed.

Had dealer diagnose they said, "oil pumps going out." Called local call in Car Clinic show, they've done several and it's the oil pickup tube o-ring. Four hrs of shop time and 40 lbs at highway speeds.

Next the growl while under acceleration.
