2003 Silverado

I have a 2003 Silverado 2500 HD 4X4 when i start it first thing it starts fine when i shut it down after inital start up it will not start or if im lucky after nearly killing batteries it may start. I have had the filter changed about 4 times, had the glow plugs replaced, had the fuel filter head rebuilt and still the starting problem continues, i have not replaced the injectors, fuel pump because of cost but when it starts it runs very strong, oh it has the Edge Attitude and Juice package, any help would be appreciated, i love my truck but getting ready to trade it in for a Ford or Dodge.

Start by taking off the Edge and see if it makes a difference. Are you losing prime after the initial start? Does it help to prime the fuel filter prior to trying to start the engine? Does it start and then just die, or does it not seem to be getting fuel (or too much)?

Do not know if i am losing prime i will check that tomorrow, when it starts it runs good does not die out, do you think the Edge is the problem it always ran strong, the starting problem started about three months ago, i will check the prime tomorrow, if it is losing prime do you think the Edge is the problem or could it be the injection pump, also do you think a lift pump would help?

If you are losing prime, you likely have a leak in the fuel system - quite possibly in the fuel filter housing. Why did you have the fuel filter head "rebuilt"? Did you break the WIF sensor, mess up the o ring seal, the prime plunger - what? Open the bleeder screw and see if fuel comes out when you pump it.

Why are you having to replace the fuel filters so much? Tank of bad fuel possibly? Are the filters really dirty, or are you just doing it because...? I go an average of 10K miles between filter changes, and then I consider it PM - I have cut the filters apart and rarely have they been more than half way dirty.

If the engine is warm, the glow plugs have no effect. In fact they don't even come on when the engine is above 120 degrees coolant temperature. That is not your problem.

I would take the edge off, and reset the ECM to stock and see what happens. It could be an issue with the fuel calibration the edge is programmed with, causing an over lean or over rich fuel mixture with a hot engine.

If your truck runs strong with the edge - it is likely not your injector pump.

You have a modded D-Max that was built in the worst year for injector problems and you're going to can it for a Ford or Dodge?? Seriously........... :rollin:

Rebuilt the fuel filter head? I've never heard of that before. Replace them yes, rebuild them? No.

You could have a low side supply issue, you could have excessive injector return rates or you could have a high side delivery issue. All possible and all nearly IMpossible to diagnose via the net. Next time it fails to start, pime the filter housing pump 30 times and see if it starts. That might narrow it down slightly. Is there any fuel in the oil?

Dont think it lost the prime after it did not start i lossened the bleeder screw and pumped it there was fuel bleeding out in a steady stream kept on pumping about 10 times each time fuel no air so i stopped tightened the bleeder and tried to start it no luck so i repeated bleed process again same result fuel immediately then tried to start it was not starting so i pumped the fuel pedelabout five times and it start it any clue?

swap the fuel pump relay w another relay in the underhood fuse box. possible bad connection in relay. did this on a friends 04 dmax and it fixed his intermittant no start. easy enough. good luck!
