2007 Hd2500 6.0l Oil Usage

Hello

I have an 07 6.0l 2500hd, about 95000k on the motor, and I tow frequently a 7000lb travel trailer. After a long run at highway speeds (65 to 70) at around 3000-3200 rpm, the oil level will be down a little, after one long run the low oil warning actually came on. It was down about half a quart that time. The motor runs well, tows well, and gets about the same mileage my 97 5.7 used to get. Idle is a little rough at times, and it has the vortec's famous piston slap at startup. I know v8s' will sometimes use a little oil on long hard runs, but the mileage on this seems a little low for that right now. I welcome all comments, must be others with a similar issue out there.

thanks

With what your towing compared to the 2000 I had carrying a truck camper at 3500#s. It sounds normal. Although your low oil indicator might be quick to come on.

It seems that way to me too, it doesn't leak, doesn't burn oil, except for the towing runs at high rpm for extended periods.

My '06 4.8 has 80K on it uses very little oil. I run Mobile 1, change the oil every 8K and it might be down 1/2 qt at oil change. I tow 4K# plus another 800# in the back of the truck and we use the truck exclusively for towing.

I don't drive as fast as you do. I generally keep it at 62mph @ 1600RPM. Because of my 3.23 Gears, I have to climb grades in 2nd @ 3500-3600RPM (62-65mph) to maintain speed. We drove up over 8200' a few weeks ago from Los Angeles, past Mammoth Mountain to Bridgeport (lots of mountain climbing) and used no oil on the whole trip (800 miles).

What gear ratio do you have???? I'm guessing 4:11.

I have 3:73's on mine, with the 6 speed when it has to shift it only bumps another 500 rpm. At highway speeds (65+) at around 3000 rpm it very rarely needs to downshift, even on fairly steep hills. The powerband starts at 3000 and even when towing not much slows it down. My 97 suburban had the 5.7 with 3:42's/3 speed, scary when towing it reved so high on a downshift.
