OnStar Mic Noise

The OnStar mic in my 2001 Suburban is picking up a fan noise and acting like a speaker.  The "fan" static does not seem to match either the front nor rear HVAC fan speed settings.  Does anyone have any ideas how to remedy this? ???

I've never heard this one before.  Are you saying that you are getting feedback "out" of the microphone?  I thought the mic. was voice activated (VAX) but only after the Onstar was initiated.

Are you sure the noise is coming from the OnStar mic?  Might you have the auto climate control?  If so there is a small fan inside an intake opening above the driver and those fans have been known to exhibit bearing noise and need to be replaced.

I'll have to check the fan idea.  It sounds quite a bit like a piece of paper lightly touching the blades.  It doesn't go off though when I shut the HVAC down.  But when I cover the OnStar mic up with my hand, the sound is almost completely muted.  I hate to think about dropping the headliner, but maybe thats what I'll have to do.

You do know that the OnStar mic is over by the mirror, right? The little grill above your head is a fan...
